Ya' know... been thinking about this for about... ... that long. And being a musician and an ex-sailor (the 2 things those kids mothers warned 'em about), I decided that cheap make-up aside, maybe the forums are thinking that they needed to **spicen'** things up considering what I've been reading about WBCCI and all...

Then again, maybe this thread has about run it's course...

Canadian health care

I have been to Canada many times in this decade and have talked to many Canadians about their health care system. They like it. Like any system, it's not perfect. As one man told me "if you need it right away, you get it". We noticed that even smaller towns have large and well kept hospitals. They know about our "system" because they get a lot of our TV and their newspapers cover the US even though our papers and TV ignore them. They wouldn't exchange. Almost 50,000,000 Americans (more than the population of Canada) have no health coverage and tens of millions more have inadequate care.

American insurance companies have been telling people for years Canadians have poor health care. It's a lie. A single payer government system works for all the industrialized countries except the US. If it didn't, wouldn't they adopt a different system?

My brother-in-law is British, says the same thing about their healthcare system... "it's not perfect", but he always had the care he needed. His sister however, was disappointed in the availability of elective, cosmetic surgery she wanted... but that's another story...

That's been the argument against "their" kind of healthcare... as opposed to our "perfect" healthcare system?

Who's against it? Those that don't have healthcare (which is a misnomer since ER's have to treat whoever comes in w/an emergency)? Or those that profit from the current healthcare system (& drugs)?

Managed care has become just that. Care managed to the extent of maximum profit at the expense of service delivery. Ask any MD about ethics and second guessing...

Just a matter of time. It will change but not without those that profit (middleman), desperately trying to hold on to every last penny... and buying any politician who'll listen... IMHO...

Healthcare is about you, me and our neighbors, folks...

This simply is not true. I don't want to turn this into something political or an argument but.... Anyone in America can get emergency medical care whenever they need it regardless if they can pay or not. If Canadian health care were so good then why do so many wealthy Canadians and Europeans come to America for health care and why are the American health care systems quite unanimously considered the best in the world. Also no they would not change as long as there are politicians with a vested interest in seeing the system remain as it is. Governments do bad crap all the time and those same governments hardly ever change anything. I've seen government run health care systems first hand in more than one other country and no thanks, I'll keep paying for quality medical care here(no it's not perfect but it is better than the rest). There have been specials about having to wait for months or years even in countries with government run health care, only to then recieve less than optimum care. With all that government messes up why in the world would anyone want them to run our HEALTH care system?

As a Canadian who has lived in the US and experienced their healthcare system, I'll stick with the Canadian system thank you very much. No, it isn't perfect but it does offer quality healthcare for all of our citizens regardless of socio-economic situation. I'm glad you think that your system is the best in the world, mrmossyone, you're welcome to it. I'll not criticize your system nor your government and I'd appreciate it if you extended us Canadians the same courtesy. And please don't refer to ours as "bad healthcare", because that is only your opinion and hardly fact!

My wife is in the health care field, RN, as was her mother and one of her sisters. She would agree with everything you have said. She works for 2 local hospitals and they do not turn patients away even if they can't pay. If my doctor decides that I need certain types of surgery, either emergency or elective, I want to be able to have it done when needed, not when they decide they can get around to it. I pay for that privilege every month and don't want some government getting in the way.

You are correct. And guess who pays for it? Absolutely, socialized medicine... oops, I mean, the taxpayer... You are confusing acute care with health care.

Precisely. That's the operational word... wealthy. If you are not wealthy, SOL?

You're confusing expertise with availability of care. Last I heard, the rest of the world had some pretty freakin' good MD's/hospitals also... of course, those that have a vested interest in our current system wouldn't be telling us that... and even if they did, it doesn't change the fact that a huge part of this country is without healthcare.

What's wrong with wanting Americans having access to the best healthcare in the world? I mean, EVERY American?

WOW... excellent highjacking!!! You know some of the best health care in the world is in that so called back water of Cuba. Excellent health care for all, socialist, more Doctors per capita than anywhere in the world. You can thank Reagans evil empire for setting that one up.

Oh sorry, you wanted to hear USA,USA, USA.....

Must be a night for non-poiltical discussions 'round the old forum, eh?

Maybe it's the difference in the way political systems work around the world. Here in America, just purchasing the tag for your new car is painful. I'm sure health care would be managed better by the gummit, don't y'all?

62 is absolutely right about Cuban medical care. There's a lot screwed up on that island, but it's not health care. I believe their infant death rate is lower than that of the US (and many nations are ahead of the US on that). Cuba exports doctors to other countries.

Note also the primary cause of bankruptcies in the US is medical debts. Sure, anyone can go to an emergency room, but someone has to pay for it. It's a very inefficient system and leads to, guess what, emergency care instead of preventative care. That costs a lot more and generally the public pays for it through either taxes and donations to those hospitals. Using emergency services for routine needs like an ear ache or flu is grossly inefficient.

American health care is far from considered "unanimously" the best in the world. That's a myth. We do some things well (elective plastic surgery may be one thing), others do some things very well. It certainly helps to be rich in the US. You may be able to afford the medication you need. If you have Medicare Part D or other prescription insurance, maybe you can talk your insurance company into the medication you need rather than the one an accountant chooses for you.

To believe that democracies such as Canada, Great Britain, France or Germany are run by such corrupt governments that they can manipulate their people and refuse them quality health care is absurd. Polls in all those countries always show the citizens want single payer systems and do not want what we have in the US. Maybe we have the corrupt government that lies to us.

Anyone with an ax to grind (such as American health insurance companies) can find examples of mistakes made and half truths so they can publicize their viewpoint.

Yes, 62, excellent highjacking. This thread was tired and sickly anyway.
