is this an absurd idea?

Just wondering, if we have all the comforts of home in our '64 Safari, how 'bout putting in some sort of mini-fireplace unit?..or is that a no-no idea for such a confined space?

That is a marine unit. Tom is also into sailboats. Be very careful as more than one person has died due to carbon monoxide from inproper installation. It is cool.

Take a look, also, at JCFerguson's remodel thread. He put in a marine stove, but IIRC, it's not like a fireplace, more like a stove.

Hi Tim,

I was always wanting a fireplace in our home, which didn't come w/one (we have a tiny home, only 1050 sq ft.)..so my mind started to wander about making the Safari a nice little place to have a wood/fake wood, electric, LP, or anything that would resemble a fireplace..I think I'm going to really look into this..if I can have a microwave, and our A/C that we put in a couple of years ago, then the next step would be to go for a fireplace!!!..hmm, wait til I present that idea to my hubby!

Marinestove.com for the Little Cod, they also have a Sardine model. I was raised in N.H. and we heated out home with 4 woodburners. It truly is the best kind of warm there is. P.S. We may know a few of the same folks plane people that is Tim

I used to sell RV's for about three years before joining the Coast Guard. The Fleetwood Terry was one of the brands we carried.

They (among many others) have started using an electric fireplace that is very convincing and extremely cozy. It projects the image of flames from behind a glass screen and has an electric heater inside. It has fake logs and when it's going it looks very real. The benefits are that it runs off of 110VAC, and you can have the fire on without the heat if it's just the ambience you are looking for! You can even adjust the speed of the flame flickers to really set the mood. Did I mention that it comes with a remote control? It also requires no hole cutting in your shell as it needs no vent.

I thought they were extremely cool (figure of speech) but that's just my two cents.

Please Don't

And along comes the Insurance Underwriter with almost 30 years in that business.

Please don't introduce a new open flame into such a small environment. The propane devices you have are enough exposure as it is.

- in a vintage environment especially - you have drapes that will flame through the entire front panels (for example) easily within 1 minute

- the vinyl wall covering will actually melt and then spread flame in what we call rivelets across the floor as it burns spreading the fire to other surfaces

- think about all the plastic - such as in the bulkheads and the "wood" as it's called in 1971 and post units - fiberglass actually drips burning balls of flame as it burns

- the smoke factor in an airstream on fire will likely overcome you so quickly that you'll end up in Airstream Heaven - the smoke will be very black, heavy and thick

Sorry to sound so morbid but we need you around to give us repair and Airstream experience advice.

The Mini Franklin is pending ANSI motor home approval. This stove is a direct vent design. Common sence would prevail in any installation. if not Darwin wins. Good thing Wilbur and Orville did not listen to the nay sayers,

Your Choice

What ever you think - I do this for a living. Do what you want. Comparing this to a new idea and a proven situation is not the same. I was just trying to add input when you have open flames in conjunction with foam/drapery material/vinyl. Not trying to start a battle - just experienced advise.

Hi Ganglin,

It has been my own style to check out as many different scenarios, situations, and consequences in whatever new challenges or events I've come across and have had to work through in my not so many years of life..thnx for your input.
