Check Post #3 for the link to the "Is there a way" thread which will tell you how to eliminate the obnoxious ad on various browsers.

I can't be bothered to do so, but I certainly hate the damn guy.

I think when any Forum signs a contract to get the ads to help pay for all this, they have little choice in what's posted. Since we all learn how to either ignore the ads or work around in the browsers, the ads just keep getting more and more obnoxious to get our attention. There is no free lunch.

And when an advertiser's name is Kellog you know that they are NOT going to let you tell them what they can do.

However, on the other side of the coin, one would think that they would have enough smarts to know when they are putting up something that is way "over the wall" in terms of annoyance factor.

Have they no sensitivity to the negative feedback it will generate?

Apparently not.

Thank goodness that Crusty's simple fix works 100%. Sad that we have to use it, though.

An analogy for this situation is a person who pays for cable tv and still has to suffer through commercials. Even PBS broadcasts semi-commercial advertisements thinly disguised as sponsor acknowledgements.

I don't see it changing any time soon.

Thumbs down Enough is enough!

And just when I was getting real good at "speed-scrolling down" the minute the page starts to open, he's now showing up on the left side & bottom too!!!

I've gotten rid of 'him' on my MAC at home...but not on my PC at work (I use both Safari and FireFox on my PC). Oh well, no more surfing at work for me ~ guess I won't be making it to 10,000 posts!

Before there was an ad blocker for Safari, I recommended editing /etc/hosts for those who didn't have Firefox and AdBlock. One problem with that technique is that it requires a line for every server in an ad domain, such as adserver1.ads.com, adserver2.ads.com, etc. An ad blocker can eliminate them all in one line, i.e. ads.com. Another problem is that modifying /etc/hosts isn't granular, it blocks everything. An example is to eliminate the corner-peel ad, one has to block airstreamclassifieds.com, which also blocks classified ads one might want to see. An ad blocker lets you block airstreamclassifieds.com/peel/ without blocking other content.

Here's what you can ad block that's on (or has been on) these forums:

Block ads/tracking

doubleclick.net
quantserve.com
extreme-dm.com
googleadservices.com
google-analytics.com
googlesyndication.com

Block double-underline text with pop-ups

intellitxt.com
kontera.com

Block Boom banner ad

m1.2mdn.net/viewad

Block AirForums banner ads

socialknowledge.com

Block Airforums corner-peel ad
but not the advertised airstreams:

airstreamclassifieds/peel/

Block the large picture above classified ads
but not the advertised airstreams:

airforums.com/images/banner/airstream-300x250_homepage.gif

Hope this helps.

I am speaking for myself and not the owners or moderators. Yeah that "hands guy" WAS irritating.

Folks, it is so simple to install Firefox and the AdBlock plug in, that even a cave man can do it.

I have multiple computers and have done the editing on /etc/hosts as well. Quite a simple process. No screw drivers or wrenches needed. Just fingers attached to hands.

Hey Crusty, Thanks. You Da Man! That mod to the "Hosts" file is great! Not only is the ad gone, but there is no blank area. I see more of the forums on the screen now.

How did you find out about this? Is there a web site showing all the different ad sites you can put in your hosts file? How did you know what address the "Waving Idiot" was coming from? Very cool

NEVER MIND

I just figured it out. Right click, and look at properties. That is slick as goose sh*t!

... so if the owner needs the advertising money, doesn't blocking the ads kind of counteract the reasoning behind the ads?

I would be willing to pay a higher user fee to be commercial free. Since I intentionally never click the advertisements, the income would be a drastic increase for the owners.

I would be willing to wager others would do the same.

I cannot stop eating my rice crispies and my youngest is devastated when the box runs out, so boycotting the product is not an option.

I have boycotted Exxon since the Valdez accident. Sure hope they pay the fine they have been fighting since it happened. It was exactly 15% of their net profit last quarter. Wish I could hold off paying my debts that long.

Sorry I digressed.

If I ever run into that guy on the street, I am going to knock him down, force him to eat cereal and yell at him while I wave my fingers in his face.

There....I feel better now
