Regedit ??? Bad! Very Bad! Close it immediately and don't save any changes if prompted.

Reread my post where I specified the path to the file (except that your drive letter is omitted - I don't know if your system drive is C or D

Browse to the HOSTS file and open with Notepad as I said earlier, add that line anywhere below the last line that starts with a #, save the HOSTS file, and when you save it make sure that it is saved as HOSTS, not HOSTS.txt

This is what my HOSTS file looks like when I open it with Notepad.

Correct me if I am wrong but...
I thought the whole point of "Supporting Members" was to get rid of those pop-ups.

Wheel Interested. Don't use Explorer. It is really a dinosaur.. Go and down load Firefox and you will have no further problems.. It will even import all your favorites from IE for you... Good luck...

I don't think you are - that looks like it might be a Windows "Rights" related problem.
Are you logged in to Windows as Administrator equivalent?

Right click on the HOSTS file and select Properties and see if the Read Only box is checked, and if so clear it and try to save again.

It's vintage Jason.

I'll take it for a spin. I have held out thus far kind of a pain to have to change solely because of the forum though.

Yeah, it will take some getting use to. But sometimes its fun to play in the 21 century.

My media PC runs Vista, I'm glad all I do is watch tv and movies with it. I have a mac I play on... Windows drive me nuts sometimes.

Stay out of regedit. You can mess some things up if your not careful. and window will not be forgiving.

I know. Been there done that.. Total reinstall after that mistake.

Property boxes were clear

After it says I can't save I can save as text. Then I tried to rename hosts text but hosts a file of the same name already exists. Then I tried to delete hosts but it wont let me says its in use, and if I could I then would rename hosts.text to hosts

Try to rename HOSTS to HOSTS.old
Then Save your modifed HOSTS file (or save it as HOSTS.txt and then rename to HOSTS).

Check your PM's

What are you referring to? Where is this SMALLER BOX?

Since I have never seen anyone waving his hand at me I must have solved that problem but I am interested in this small box question.

Carol, I downloaded Firefox, it will prompt you to copy all your shortcuts and preferences from Internet Exploder. You can also get Adblock Plus to Firefox, it will block pretty much anything you tell it to.

Thanks Terry. Crusty is working behind the scenes to help me out. Very nice members you get here. I will post my resolution.

I do agree with the previous poster about the premium accounts should be spared all this rigamarole. And even non-supporting members should be spared highly intrusive and obnoxious advertising.

Isn't it crazy that we have to find ways to get around stupid ads? I hate the waving guy almost as much as I hate that obnoxious TV pitchman, Billy Mays. I have no idea what the waving guy is selling, though I waited once to see what it was so I would make a mental note never to buy it. It was something I'd never heard of and have no idea what it's supposed to do.

I got rid of the page peal months ago (is it still there?) by doing some things recommended to me by someone on the Forum who knows this stuff. I haven't been able to access the classifieds ever since, though there's a fix for that, but I can live without the classifieds. I have a hard time using my time to bother with this crap.

I don't want to bother going into my software to fiddle with it. I imagine some people just stop using the Forum, and some have reported giving up on it. I think the Forum contracts with a company for the ads—probably Google—and apparently has little power to stop the obnoxious ones, but there are consequences when there are fewer eyeballs on the Forum, or angry ones. We used to get ads for Airstream dealers, but now it's strange stuff often having nothing to do with this demographic. I wonder what this demographic is?—old cranky millionaires with Airstreams might be a little inaccurate.

The waving guy seems to be one of the worst ads for encouraging people to buy something I can remember. So, as we are waved away by it, it does have some historic quality to it.

Bye, bye waving guy.

I agree Gene!

I do have GREAT news. I have said good-by to waving guy. Through the generosity and 4 hours effort Crusty has walked me (inept slowmoving non-understanding me with a particularly quirky pc environment) through resolution. I have an entire inch more of screen real estate and I am sooooo grateful and happy to keep my current browser.

Thank you thank you thank you Crusty. A pleasure meeting you, that alone was worth the hassle, nice silver lining. You really know your stuff.

I gotta IMac but there isn't much to do on it, runs itself. I like PC drama and the gazilla buggy software titles I can try. Life could be so easy though... Maybe if I just stopped turning on the PC I could make a break for it.

Well, at least there are no ads with audio here, and there are no little jackasses that

walk out from a screen corner blabbering their head off. That is where I draw the line.

Wave all you want, I seem to be able to tune the visual crap out. And, for a small

fee.......... I can teach you how to ignore on-screen ads also.
