What time do the polls open out there? Man, you are an early riser, Rich. I'll vote on the way home this afternoon. Have to be at work at the same time the polls open, so it's the end of the day for me.

My son and I are heading out in just a few minutes. Let's all follow the postman's creed (slightly modified): neither fog nor wind nor rain nor flood. . .will keep us from casting our votes today. May the best candidates win. Wear your "I Voted" sticker with pride ~G

No big lines again this time...though just as important as a Pres. election.

yea but...if the polls open at 6 am Rich's time(that's 8 am EST) ...How did he vote before 5:30 mountain time (7:30 am EST)? What am I missing?

Steve

UPDATE: Weird...Rich posted his first message at 7:23 am EST (or so it indicated on the post), and now it's changed to 8:23 am...now that's strange!

I was the Democratic County Chairperson in Henry County, Iowa back in the 70's. The major responsibility was to get out the vote which we worked very hard at doing. When election day would come I always had this feeling that I should have, could have, done more and when the results came in I really started to worry. Most elections did come out pretty much as we expected and our efforts were awarded. In fact the current governor of Iowa, Tom Vilsack is a product of our organizational efforts in Henry County. But there was one election I will never forget. Our candidate for State Representative lost by one vote! I stood with him at 3:00 A.M. staring at the board with the numbers. All the votes had been counted and he was one short. If you ever think your vote does not count think about that gentleman seeing his career end by one vote.

At 6 a.m. I was standing outside our voting place greeting voters and handing out sample ballots with our party’s recommendations.

It was rough, we had to endure the cold & dark morning without coffee & doughnuts. Maybe next year we should the Airstream.

We sent the vote by mail ballots in last week. AZ had a boat load of propositions. You could actually vote for (or against) two competing anti-smoking initiatives. What fun. Voting is what democracy is about. In the US that is followed closely by jury duty and the right to arm bears.

According to the county elections office, 57% of the ballots cast here are absentee. Makes sense to us. With so many referrenda on the ballot, it takes a little while to make sure that a no vote is not really a yes in disguise.

Now, if we could only find a way to get the political solicitations on the phone to cease. Yesterday, for example, we had about 8 calls, all demon-dialing recorded messages of course and some by people irrelevant to what's happening here, like Bill Clinton saying that taxing ourselves for oil produced in this state will reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Logic is suspended around Election Day, it seems.

I was an "election official" for a re-count a few years ago. in our little town, the winner was decided by 11 votes. It was a very interesting process...not unlike some of the scenes we saw on TV in '02...

The re-count came up with a different number than the original tally, for some of the same reasons of the "'02" debacle: the machines are imperfect, but more importantly, people don't follow the directions.

So my advice is: follow the directions, or don't bother, because your vote won't be counted, or even worse, it'll get counted for the other guy.

We get to vote by mail here in Ory-gun. With all the cleverly worded referendums on the ballot, it really helps to have some "ponder time."

We also got to vote-by-mail here in WARSHINGTUN, so did it a week ago. Nice when you live "out a ways". Most disturbing was an article in this am's Spokane paper about a 21 year old college student proclaiming he was "actively NOT voting" because "he didn't feel remotely connected to the issues". Now that's a great attitude!!!! Wait untill he looks for his Social Security down the line.
Cheers, Jeff

Voted on the way to work this morning. Left 10 minutes early. There was a line, which is unusual and a good sign, and it took 20 minutes. With lighter than expected traffic I actually got to work on time.

Wearing my, "I'm a Georgia Voter" sticker right now!

One thing folks should think about. Bill Clinton listened to every voter opinion poll that was published during his administration. Notice I said Voter opinion poll. You may have the right to complain if you don't vote, but politicians only listen to the complainers that vote. Those that don't vote, don't get heard and their voices don't count. Only voters count to those who get elected.
