I once saw a quote on the internet: "No one under the age of 30 writes checks anyway." I think this is very true - I'm over 30, and I only write one check every month, and that's for a bill whose online-bill-payment setup is terrible. Otherwise everything is paid online; some are even auto-debited from the account.
I don't think I've written a check in 20 years. My wife says she's written three, one for the Tundra, one for her Subaru, and the other for the AS. And both the Toyota and the Subaru dealers took my Amex card for the first $10,000 (love them reward points). Since I retired to do very little that requires literacy. I got into the habit of online banking and bill paying when I used to travel a lot on business. Now I travel a lot for pleasure and don' see any advantage in regressing back to the old pen and paper days. I don't read paper books or newspapers either, my iPad carries those around for me. No ink on my fingers. Ain't the 21st century great?

Hi, my cash wasn't that heavy. Credit cards paid for gas, camping, tires, repairs, and for Princess Georgette. Cash for food and fun.

Hi, my wife and I have been very happy with our $100.00 per year dumb phones. [Trac-Fone] Our's has a camera, but the pictures cannot be transferred from them. I carry a camera at all times.

I guess nowadays you can deposit a check by taking a picture of it with your smartphone.

Do you suppose you can deposit cash by taking a picture of the bills with your smartphone?

All of the above, here. Mr. Toad, I have the same problem... "What!? What do you mean, I can't do that online?!" I can't believe PAYG broadband is finally available in the US! Thank gawd. Now, when I don't have to wait to get an unlocked iPhone til I'm in the UK...that'll be progress!

As a snow bird, I appreciate the convenience of using electronic means to complete financial transactions, but I have been burned and am very cautious with the use of the debit card in particular. I will never use it if it leaves my sight as at a restaurant when the waiter takes your card. In that card I will use cash or a credit card that affords more protection. If you do actively use electronic banking, you certainly need to be vigilant by checking your accounts daily.

I have done and continue to do them all but the phone. I believe a phone should be a phone and that's all. Anything more and people at work think you can work all the time - even on vacation.

Old fart here

I'm a 44 year old fart. I do have a cell phone, computer etc, but they are for fun. I am the guy in line at the store that is rolling his eyes, fuming inside as the young person in front of me pays for a $1.99 cup of coffee on a card. Really, is cash that hard to use? I don't understand it, it gets worse with every new gadget. The comercial were friends are dinning, and at time to pay send each other money electonically to me is the upmost in stupidity. JMO!!!!! I long for the simpler times, when people talked face to face. Paid in cash. And did not check their online balance 5 times a day. Hi, I'm John, and I'm a dinosour.

Yep, out there on the edge with Brad and Zell. Using my iPad on the balcony to post this. Wouldn't have it any other way.

I do still have a check book, but wrote fewer than 10 checks over the last year. Did have my credit card info stolen one time. They used it to buy $12,000 worth of electronics which were shipped to Saudi Arabia. Easy to prove it wasn't me since I was in NYC at the time and had the card trail to prove it. Am Ex refunded it all and also sent a new card.

I love new technology! Well, maybe not learning to program the DVR.....

I use all of the above, I always keep $20.00 in my pocket for the small items. I don't like to carry alot of cash on me because of criminal activity. (Actual incident convinced me.)
The Debit/Credit card keeps me from over spending like would happen with a credit card and is usfull everywhere credit cards are used and I don't have to pay the finance charge or yearly fees.
All paychecks are direct deposit, 2 are government checks, 1 wifes ck and all are manditory.
I do keep multiple cards (1 personal, 1 online, 1 travel) so to keep personal account separate from the online/travel thieves. Also provides me with easy tax information for the end of year deductions if needed.
I don't have nor have I written a check in over 10 years, if it can't be paid for with DC or cash then I get a money order/cashiers ck, and if not then >I don't need it and they dont need to sell it< and I only use 2 of them per year which costs $1.00 total vs $30.00 for checks which just another way for someone to get into your account, which when you do write a check it is scanned and put in the trash anyways. Banking institutions no longer maintain paper checks anyways unless you pay for it, look at your bank statement they are scanned images.
My cell carrier is Verizon and I do have a smart phone and use it, had the droid x and loved it, and the usb for the laptop internet on both and paid for it. The new phone I just got is the Droid Razzor Maxx 4G and then got a lapdock for it so no longer do I need my laptop or internet usb for it, or WiFi unsecured. The phone can do everything my computer can with security. So just 1 internet account now and it is portable.
Taxes I do myself for free with Turbo tax, very self explanative for an idiot like me, and I have only messed it up 1 time, IRS was very quick to let me know too. I get my refund direct deposit and have it in 7 days or less.
I like convience and not to have to worry bills are paid or not as I can take care of them anytime.
If you think that because you do not use any of the tech that you are not being tracked or anything or less aceptable to bank/credit card theft are living in a dream. You are more protected with the more tech that you put on your side in this world of technology.
