Hurricane Maria

http://www.usviupdate.com/

Maria as of late last evening is already almost the same maximum barometric pressure as Irma and winds are close. The forecasts are now to hit the Islands and turn north. So, the above link is key if anyone knows anyone on the Islands.

Thanks! We have relatives in Puerto Rico. We talked with them last night and they are hunkered down for this storm as well. They still have the windows boarded up from Irma. They have water and food and the house is made of cement. The hard part is the waiting afterwards. It can take days to hear from them. I am going to buy them a solar panel so they can charge their phones after storms and reach out to the world.

Prayers for Puerto Rico and all the other islands hit hard by Maria.

FYI all of the charts in the Jose thread are updating in real time [see Post #17 there et seq.]:

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f48/...se-172639.html

. . . so it is possible to watch the wave etc. effects as Maria comes close to Cape Hatteras, and hopefully heads out to sea soon, as forecast. In NY we are watching nervously.

We have not yet heard from relatives in Puerto Rico. The area they live in is pretty devastated from what we have seen in the news. We keep trying and get a busy signal. Hopefully we will hear from them soon.

Puerto Rico was hit very, very hard by Hurricane Maria and will take a long time to recover. There are a lot of people there not as fortunate as all of us and will need any help we can all give.

Steve, is there any local charity you can recommend, where hopefully the donations get used directly, without administrative costs cutting into things?

Thanks,

Peter

Assuming Mariah turns eastward fairly soon, Buoy 44017, 23 NM SSW of Montauk NY, should show increased wave heights, over and above the 11.8' showing at this hour:

Link for Buoy 44017: http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=44017

Already, Buoy 44088, just off Virginia Beach, shows wave heights peaking this morning at 23' :

And Buoy 44066, 75 NM east of Long Branch NJ, with wave heights around 19':

These three charts should continue updating overnight.

Stay Safe!

Peter

Peter....I don't know of any yet. We are still not able to get through to the island at all via landline, cell phone, etc.... and received just the one email from the relatives.

We have been gathering things to send to the family once the post office, Fedex, UPS etc.... are up and running again. We are waiting to hear from our relatives via e-mail again and I will ask about charities.

Thanks Steve, and for the post on the 20-footer thread.

Friends of ours lost their house on St. John, and recommended a local rescue organization which could use all donated funds immediately, with no "cut" taken by umbrella groups or administration.

Looking forward to your recommendation for PR relief work.

Peter

PS-- The radar in Post #7 indicates that Maria is indeed heading east. Good news for us on Long Island [which is now visible at the top of that frame].

Peter....I saw this one on the television this morning. It was organized by Beatriz Rosello, the Governor of Puerto Rico's wife. http://unidosporpuertorico.com/en/

I have a cousin in the National Guard and he has been deployed to Puerto Rico....I will ask him when we hear from him as well.

Thanks Steve, or a local charity close to your family there. On what part of the island do they live?

Prayers for all . . . and for extreme relief efforts to come from our federal government. So far it looks a little paltry IMO.

Peter

PS -- Someone said a couple of weeks ago, that the entire Caribbean needs a "Marshall Plan" of massive proportions. If our leaders want to go down in history as caring souls, they could shift gears here and "marshall" the international community!

Peter....we have received another email from family in PR and they are doing fine. They are on the southeast side of the island. The hurricane eye passed over their area and the devastation is pretty major. With that said, they are fine. They report that the grocery stores in their area are open on limited hours and they have been able to stock up on things. Still no electricity or cell phone service except for the one they are using to send emails. They aren't sure how it's working, but it is. Thankfully, the don't live in a major metropolitan area like San Juan or Ponce.

There are so many charities doing things for PR and it's hard to recommend one over another. Vieques, the island just off the coast in that area, was hit very hard and needs help. They have been literally cut off from the world since last week.

We hope to communicate again today and I will ask the question about specific charities in the area. Without electricity and communication, they may not know but it's worth a try.

Thanks Steve, no rush. Glad they are able to buy the basics.
