Just to quickly reiterate....herbals and supplements are NOT "homeopathic"....herbals and supplements have actually something in them. (note, this is not an endorsement at large of "herbals and supplements).

I love that we have herbals and supplements though in many ways...but as a pharmacist, I cringe at the state of total lack of regulation - back in 1994, the DSHEA was passed, deregulating these products.....and now, with multiple studies looking at say ginko, saw palmetto, and others, its is far too often found that the products we are being sold are too often not even containing what is advertised and that in some cases it is a "bait and switch"...example being an ED natural Chinese supplement that when analyzed has Viagra added in it...or an herbal sleep aid that has Benadryl sprinkled into it. The New York Attorney general just discovered a bunch of these problems and had many retailers pull these products off the shelf.

Even if we do not force these products into the same regulation as RX drugs, through FDA, at least I hope that people will agree that the manufacturing practices should be clean, proper, and the products should contain what is actually advertised.

On the subject further of home remedies (which I like to think about not as purchased products, but concoctions we make at home) - tea with lemon and honey I am told by the many Veterans I serve in clinic is a wondrous thing.

I understand what you're saying, PG. You give the same arguments as one of my medical doctors.

I take omega-3's, glucosamine msm, and vitamin b-complex....all and simply because he says everyone should take these every day.

So, I do, because I trust him.

If this helps one person I'd be happy.
What you are doing here is stretching your hamstring muscles which are the ones located on the back of your leg between your ankle and your knee, also referred to as your calf muscles. There are two other ways of doing this in addition to what you posted, one is to stand on a step with the edge of the step located just behind the ball of your foot and the middle, feet apart same width as your shoulders, relax your foot and let your heel drop slowly as far as you can and hold for a few seconds then lift your ankle as high as you can for a few seconds, repeat this process a couple of times each time letting your heal drop as far as possible and holding. This should be done at least once per day, you will find many of the leg cramps disappear, most the first time you do it.
The other method is the one I use most as I have back and knee problems which sometimes throws off my balance. Sit on the bed or floor place legs together straight out in front of you with feet and legs together toes pointed up, tip your feet so your toes point back towards you as far as possible, repeat as many times as necessary to give relief. This will also stretch the ham strings as well but not as good as the first one in the standing position.

I would put a lot more trust in home remedies than homeopathic remedies.
Not always true, there are some that have been used over the years that do work, but most are lost do to lack of use and the elderly population dieing off.

Be careful with Dr Oz, he is currently under investigation by the medical board because a few of his so called remedies did not work as claimed and was found to be nothing more than a scam. I doubt much will come of it, but the fact that he did make you wonder about the others.

Honey from a local bee farmer does help with diabetes and blood pressure and will also help you sleep too. About a teaspoon to 4-5 oz of hot tea or coffee (reg or decalf). My cup I have is a 16 oz cup and I put a tablespoon in it every night to help with my Type 2 diabetes, and it does help. Since I have started it my doc has cut back my metformin dosage.

Tumeric and raw honey is a great antioxidant, and great for colds/ flu, and for muscle spasms. 1 tbl spoon to 3.5 oz. of raw honey to make a mix that should last a week.

I read that, too, but recall it being about specific products he touted on his show...rather than home remedies. I could be wrong.

Looking on google, this appears to be a congressional hearing, rather than the medical board.

Overall, I believe he shares good and credible information.

I am a TOTAL believer in FRESH garlic! Not only do I love it, I swear it keeps me extremely healthy. As soon as I start feeling a little under the weather, I start doubling up on the garlic. Works every time! Hot toddies are excellent as well!!

As others have pointed out, the word "homeopathic" is often misused.

Homeopathy is a pre-scientific idea involving "like cures like" and the "law of infinitesimals". With current understandings of physics, chemistry and biology, we can see that such ideas are magical thinking with no foundation in reality.

But it's no surprise people confuse "homeopathic" with "home remedy" or "natural cures". Or even real medicine:

Cold-Eeze has therapeutic levels of zinc, which double-blinded, placebo controlled clinical trials have indicated have a very small effect on the intensity and duration of a cold. Hence, it's "real" medicine and NOT homeopathic. So the word "homeopathic" on the box is pure marketing through confusion.

Also, beware the "naturalistic fallacy". There is zero reason to believe that a "natural" cure is better than a "synthetic" cure. Modern medicine has teased the active ingredients out of many "natural" cures and can provide concentrated or synthetic versions with more potency and better ability to control dosages and avoid side effects.

Finally, to set up "Alternative Medicine" to "Traditional Medicine" is a false dichotomy. Better to think of medicine that works contrasted to medicine that doesn't. Any "alternative" cure that actually works will become accepted by the medical community in short order if it's efficacy and safety can be shown.

Thumbs up

"homeopothic" has also gained a higher acceptance over the years...

Bon Voyage...

Quick question: how do you edit/modify a post?

Does the "Edit" button go away after a short period? I see one for this post but not my last.

Yes. IIRC after about 10 minutes the Edit feature goes away. If it is a major edit you can contact the moderation team for help via the report post button or look at the bottom of the page where the names are listed, moderators are in bold.
