I regret to say we probably won't be able to make it to 29 Palms. Winter has hit (maybe snow tonight) and travel is limited... besides my book deadlines are keeping me glued to my computer! Will be there in "spirit"!

Reminds me of my first trip to Yellowstone around 20 years ago. We were at a fireside chat with one of the rangers. She said that 11 people had been injured that year by the bison and they all had one thing in common. They all thought they could just walk up to one in a field and take a close up picture.

Richard,

Here's what happened to Steve and me one fine tour day..There were kids standing right in front of the beast in the parking lot. I was trying to get Steve's attention as he was up on a horshoe walkway viewing the boiling mud pots..I thought I was as close as I'd get to a bison (w/in 6 ft.)..that behemoth had to be bigger than the Ford truck it was next to..then I saw Steve stop dead in his tracks..as well as 20 tourists behind him..he had his own bison jump up on the walkway right in front of him!!!..he and the others had to wait about 15 minutes motionless, while the bison decided to continue his jump back down in the ravine..and to top it off, right after the bison finished his jump, another one followed right behind..soo awesome
