Help - Password hint

HELP ---- need password for this hint?

"RARE EGYPTIAN MARBLE CAT"

I had given Heather a CLICKFREE backup for her computer, 5 or more years ago. It is one of the early ones that is 250GB. She used it on her old XP, but then she suspected she had a virus and disconnected it and never used it again, after wiping the XP and getting her W 7. I thought all I had to do was plug it in to get the pictures off it.

Now that she has passed from this world, I am still stumbling along trying to recover information that she just retained in her memory. She was not one to write this stuff down.

IT IS PASSWORD PROTECTED and I am disappointed, as a lot of the early family photos should be on that drive.

The password hint is "RARE EGYPTIAN MARBLE CAT" ?

There should be many of the pictures that I am missing on this drive. Heather, worked on making many videos, and dragged the photos to whatever program she was using? This means, that many of the quality photos are missing from the files I have today, but probably are on this old ClickFree drive.

I need suggestions to try to access this. Thanks for you help!

Googling shows an Egyptian Mau cat, it looks marbled.

Thanks, I will try these. The password in not case sensitive according to ClickFree, so this simplifies it a bit.

I just have to keep trying!

That's a 256 bit encryption key, you need the password. You can recover and use the drive by resetting the password, but it will wipe the data from the drive.

I'm guessing the files are encrypted, not just the access to them (master file table). There is a freeware tool called Recuva, but I doubt that it would work for you. (If you decide to try, go to the Piriform site to download as other sites have virus and spyware programs. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...89381419,d.cGU)

There was one other hope, another program that locates stored passwords on your computer, but you wiped XP and laid down W7, so that's gone.

There is no limit on the number of times you can try. Google Egyptian cats, make a list, keep checking sites for more names and hope she didn't add a number or letter to the end of the password. Crossword puzzle sites might be a good start. If she was into crosswords, it really sounds like a crossword clue, I'd start there.

An Egyptian spotted cat is a mau / MAU / Mau

One last thing, you may already know, passwords are case sensitive.

Thanks richw46

ClickFree tells me the password is not case sensitive.

And yes, she was into crosswords. (I am not)

I do have the Recuva program on this computer, so will try that.

She did not write her passwords down, as she had a memory like a *&&^^%^%? Nothing was forgotten ----- ever! ---- (Just ask me?)

I like the Clickfree products, and am in fact, going for another one right now on sale at LD. (London Drugs)

That's rare, but a good break for you. I don't write down my passwords either and my hints would never lead anyone to the password, it's an experience from my life. Then I add numbers, depending on the importance, and special characters. But I tell my wife what they are and I don't encrypt my drives so they can be read with a USB connected drive.

Don't forget to set Recuva to look for files that haven't been deleted. I just had a master file table (and backup) get corrupted. I was able to recover everything using Recuva. What great tool

BTW, I replaced that 400 gb drive with a Seagate 1 tb solid state SATA drive (SSD). Quieter, faster, bigger and only $100; big improvement.

I have been all through the pet names Dave. I have talked to her sister about earlier history, and nothing comes up.

I suspect is is a movie cat, or cartoon cat, from that period of 2005 or thereabouts. Have been trying everything? with no luck so far.

What girl names might be associated with that hint? --------------------------------

Does "CAT" stand for anything else, or is it short for anything else?

remc (Rare Egyptian Marble Cat)

Otherwise, start checking into Egyptian mythology. That "marble cat" might be a clue within a clue.

You can find crossword puzzle forums on line. Sign up, and then post this question there. I just found one called "crosswordsolver.org". Many others show up when you google it too. Try googling "Crossword puzzle forums"

edit: another site to try = crosswordgiant.com

My wife is a crossword junkie. She's suggesting "tabby". I also found this as the species: Pardofelis marmorata

If you google the phrase you'll see tons of options - maybe some will resonate with you?

Good luck!

a cat statue in marble? Cats were household gods - and were frequently mummified too.

Bast and Mau were my first guesses.

List of Egyptian Feline Deities - by Arijana

Here's a whole list. Just a thought tho.... was she a fan of the TV show Stargate?
If so, Anubis would be high on the list.

It is not the W 7 installation. It is a ClickFree backup drive that I can't access. She did give me most of the other passwords, but because she had not used this in some time, probably from 2007 or 08, she never thought to give me that one. THERE WERE OTHER PRIORITIES AT THE TIME!

But that site you gave me, reinergirl, is interesting. I did not know that. Thanks for the help.

I have tried all the above suggestions, with no luck. I am now on the google sites suggested and working away at it as I can.

Thanks everyone.

Dave

There is a pricy ancient Egyptian cat statue that sold at Christie's. One can find lots of images of it but the statue doesn't have a name that I see.
