I have an older (3+ yrs) Nokia cell phone on AT&T. I want to change my service to 'no-roaming/no-long-distance' for our extended travelling. I've been out of the loop about new cell phone technology & need to know what type (make/model) phone(s) will be best while travelling around the Cont. U.S. Any help would be appreciated.

Truthfully all the big name companies are very close to the same. 20/20 just did a segment on cell phones this past week.

I would not even think of not having the features of roaming and long distance on my cell phone. I use nationwide coverage to avoid those unpleasent roaming charges.

I understand not wanting to pay for what your not using, but one hit for a call when you are roaming is going to quickly change your mind. If you just want it for road travel in the case of an emergency and are not planning on using it very much, then you might look into one of those prepaid plans.

I thought you wanted a phone without roaming but after re-reading it I see you want a phone with a no-roaming feature.

Go with a nationwide plan, and most give you free long distance that way.

Like I said before on the carrier, most big ones are very close. You might be able to go to the 20/20 webpage and read about their findings from last weeks show.

We use Verizon and are very happy with them.

I've used Alltels "Total Freedom Plan" for several years and have never paid a roaming charge anywhere in the US, ever. It may not be the cheapest but there are never any surprises.

We just came back from the Southwest Adventure Caravan. We had coverage with Verizon when others did not. We were on a lot of Indian Reservations and some wide open desolate country. It was by far the best working service in that part of the country. It seems like they all work pretty good up and down the east coast.
