So, you'll be getting a Festivus spanking? I'm thinking you planned it this way...

More like they'll be putting bloody knuckle-bumps on my poor bald head, and that's unplanned, but not unexpected. But if they want to spank…

I work at a top 10 credit card bank that shall rename nameless though it has a fondness for Visigoths.

Anyway, we're on a project and my boss knew I was handy and asked that I make a Festivus pole, as we needed an excuse to air grievances without sounding like we were complaining.

Unfortunately, I didn't read through the spirit of the thing, and it was years since I watched the episode where it was brought up. I remember the pole was aluminum. Looking around in my garage, I spied my Airstream's original flagpole. I should have just grabbed it, stuck it on a base, and I'd be fine. It had holes and rust stains, and 50 years of oxidation. The top had a dark brown finial, which when I took it off, turned out to be a solid brass vintage doorknob, complete with button.

Since I wanted to polish it anyway, I polished the doorknob, then the 3 poles and collars. Then I built a solid walnut base as a stand. I then took the flat waterproof LED multicolor strip that I bought for the bellypan of the airstream, and wrapped that around the pole. It's actually very beautiful when lit, even pretty when not lit up. I had all kinds of people wanting to know where I got it, and may make some next year. I found out later that it should have been unadorned and as plain as possible, but this was kind of fun. It's a great decoration for the corner of a room. I may make a bunch of these for next year, though the walnut base is a bit overkill. I need to come up with something that doesn't take quite as much work.

They can remain nameless as their logo is on the bottom left corner of your festivus doc on the whiteboard. What's in your wallet? :-)

dang, way to go eagle eye. I thought I cropped all the important stuff out of the pic.

Just to let you know the inside of the company is just as fun as the outside brand.

Even though I am an outlier A/S owner: it is brown, not aluminium, [sic] I am honored that there is a holiday dedicated to aluminum. (Spelled both ways for Canadians and Americans.)

I will be polishing my pole this weekend and plant it in the ground. will have to call my siblings on a conference call to air grievances, and will install a new storm door on the house for a (modified) feat of strength.

Happy Festivus 2013

Ahhh! Another year without a Festivus Miracle . . . but the day isn't over yet. The day started in a very disappointing way (as all celebrations often start). My employer decided to be funny and get in on Festivus too. When trying to log in to my work account, this is what the screen looked like (see below). How can they take such a joyous day away and say that they want to hear our grievances? Really? How did things turn out at your place of employment, robwok?

I'm also really disappointed in YOU people (except for Protagonist and Aluminuminum -- you've got the spirit -- a rant and a donation!). Now, on to the airing of grievances. This year, I will air about the Airstream community. I've really got problems with you people. Do you really think we working 'streamers can attend all those rallies? Well, here is some news, WE CAN'T, so why do you keep pressuring us? Sure, it's gotta be nice to be retired or self-employed or a self-employed blogger (yep, some claim to be). However, some of us have bosses who limit our time off (don't get me started!). Oh, and guess what? It isn't all that helpful to say, "Just ask your boss for time off." Do you think that after 17 years I haven't tried that? I've really got problems with you people!

Feats of strength are next.

Let's get ready to rumble!

Lisa
