There are many aspects to Habitat for Humanity...

And we've encountered one more this week in Lewisburg, WV

Lewisburg and the surrounding area experienced widespread flash floods last week (June 24, 2016). My wife and I are attending the WBCCI Rally in Lewisburg and the rally has suffered minor problems such as power outages and a boil water advisory. Local businesses are generally open. Many homes and businesses are still cleaning up debris and regrouping after the floods. It's amazing to see the aftermath!

The office and ReStore of the local Habitat affiliate were flooded with 4" of water. Not much when compared to several feet if water experienced by some in the area.

Today several Airstreamers helped load office furniture into a box van in order to help the affiliate move to a new facility. Tomorrow we'll clean the mud from the office furniture and begin moving into the new location.

You never know what you'll get involved with when volunteering with Habitat. Be flexible and be open to experiences outside the norm.

Thanks to this thread, we got involved last year with three builds. We've signed up for Hobbs for later this year. We would have tried for more builds this year, but we've been busy with Laborers For Christ and our daughter seemed to think that our presence was required for a couple of weeks around her wedding. Can't imagine why. <grin>

I have signed up and been accepted with Habitat near Thibodeaux LA again for the coming winter Jan to April hope to see some of the people I worked with last winter, and maybe another Airstreamer, I was the only one last winter.

Danielle and I made a presentation for Habitat RV CAV at the 2016 Texas Country Air rally in Quanah, TX

We didn't think to take pictures at the seminar but we've attached some photographs of the rally. If you want more details about the rally there is lots of information on Facebook/TexasCountryAir

So great of you guys to post these pictures and GREAT to see you both in Fredericksburg yesterday. Also, thanks for always talking about Habitat's RV Care-a-vanners to the RV community. It's so much fun and what a great way to give back! I do hope you will take a look at the Fellsmere, Florida build next March. I'll be there along with Bill and Lynda in their airstream. Safe travels on your way home

Hi Bev1940

Hope all goes well for you in LA. great place to be in the winter and lots of good food too! Several years ago we worked with Tony and Wayne at that affiliate - they were the construction supervisors.

We also met Baker Bill, another Care-A-Vanner, while woking on that project. He was a fantastic cook! And he had such an interesting, custom RV.

Sounds like you'll be there during Mardi Gras. We attended the parades in Homa and had a blast.

Here's the Latest RV Care-A-Vanner Brochure

I just came across the latest version of the RV CAV handout/brochure. If you are interested in the program please print the brochure and give a copy to friends. Be sure to have a few with you in your RV so you can hand them out to people who may be interested.

Post a copy on your Facebook page along with a brief explanation of the RV CAV program. Send a copy by email to anyone you know that may be interested.

Thanks

We helped on a Habitat for Humanity project in Crystal River, Florida recently. They work Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 8:00 - noon. They provide plenty of water and "sports" beverages as well as fresh fruit and other snacks.

They Crystal River affiliate does not host RV Care-A-Vanners. However, they really appreciate any time you can offer. I worked on the job site and Danielle worked in the ReStore.

So.... Even if you can't find an RV CAV project that fits your schedule and location be sure to look up the affiliate in your area (regardless of where you are) and offer your time. We've done this many times and the affiliates seem very agreeable to short term volunteering. You'll learn so much about the local area, meet some interesting people, and help build a house for a partner family.

Whether you volunteer at Habitat for Humanity through the RV Care-A-Vanner program or through the affiliate near your home there's nothing quite like raising walls. I'm forever amazed that a dozen or so unskilled "laborers" can make this happen in just a matter of hours!

Thanks for posting these great pictures! It is pretty amazing to watch those walls go up, I never get tired of watching it. I'm all excited because I am headed to Fellsmere, Florida in a few weeks to build. I dewinterized my trailer today and got that "itch" to be back on the road. Looks like no there's no grass growing under your feet!

Bev1940 and kds...

Post pictures from your builds in LA and FL.

Anyone else out there volunteering with Habitat? Describe your experiences, tell us what's going on and where you've been building.

We spent some time today visiting with an Airstream owner and fellow CAVer. He's spending the season in Dade City, FL.

Danielle and I will be in Albany, GA soon to work on Collegiate Challenge. We'll post pictures after the event is complete along with a "review" of our first Collegiate Challenge project. We're looking forward to it. Sounds like it's going to be a 5 pounder with all the meals that are planned!
