Pictures from Thibodaux Trip...

...including Mardis Gras and Lake Pontchartrain (north shore)

Okay - here's pictures of our recent trip. The Habitat work was in Thibodaux, LA. We were on the road a week or so before we went to Thibodaux and then we did some sightseeing for a few days after we left Thibodaux. We had lots of fun. Met lots of interesting people and generally had a great time! In no particular order:

1) Bourgeois Meat Market - heaven for a sausage lover. "Miracles In Meat" - what more needs to be said.

2) Angela celebrated a birthday when we were there. I did not ask her age.

3) Bill makes excellent bread and is a very good chef in general. This particular morning (Mardis Gras) he was making beignets.

4) Parade participants in Houma, LA

5) Piles and piles of beads. Where do they all come from and where do they go after the parade? Turns out many of the beads are recycled in a variety of ways - art projects, re-used next year, therapy for the home-bound, etc.

6) Can you say crawfish? This was a special lunch for college students helping with Habitat. The students came down from Ontario.

7) A UFO impaled itself on the side of an Airstream. This picture was taken at the Mystery Museum in Abita Springs, LA

8) Another picture from the Mystery Museum

9) Sunset over Lake Pontchartrain.

10) Yes, we did some work for Habitat - installing a wood floor is shown hear. Our group also installed ceramic tile, painted interior walls doors and trim as well as general cleaning and debris removal, installing insulation and some woodworking.

We're headed to Michigan (the U.P.) to work on a Habitat project in Iron Mountain. We'll be so close to Wisconsin I guess we'll do some sightseeing there too.

The fall and winter RV Care-A-Vanner builds are filling quickly so don't wait too long to register. Even if a build is listed as full you can sign-up so you'll be on the waiting list.

Hey Lucius, I just arrived in the UP for the Munising build which has been moved to Manistique. I stopped in Traverse City and had dinner with Jake and Angela ( she had a birthday in LA with you guys). I'll be here and then moving onto a build in Marquette build Aug. 26th for two weeks. Where do you go after Iron Mountain?

We're going back to GA after Iron Mountain so our paths will not cross unless we can meet somewhere in between your build and ours. I wonder if there's a state park (or something) in Escanaba where we could get together.

We just missed you at Mackinaw Mill Creek. Stay in touch.

Iron Mountain Build Was Fantastic!

I don't have the pictures downloaded and re-sized yet but I wanted to drop in and say we had a great time at the Iron Mountain, MI Habitat build.

The local Habitat affiliate was very hospitable - providing drinks and snacks for break-time as well as lunch every day. I say it was the affiliate... but in many cases it was the homeowner (to be) and their friends & family. We also had a very nice welcome pot luck dinner and a similarly nice farewell pot luck dinner. The weather was beautiful (mid 70's to mid 80's) with very little rain, the area was interesting to see/visit and everyone we encountered was very appreciative of our efforts.

Pictures are on the way but it will take a few days to whittle down the 200+ snapshots to something that you'll enjoy seeing.

I promised to post pictures from Iron Mountain and I never did it. Wow, is that ever lame!? Maybe I can make up an excuse like my computer died, or my internet server was out, or I had a computer virus.... or something.

Well, there is no excuse except that I became sidetracked. I hope to do better in the future.

All I can say for now is Habitat for Humanity RV Care-A-Vanners is a great program. Danielle and I enjoy the program immensely and will continue participating. We continue to meet wonderful CAV volunteers, meet great homeowners and generally have a good time. Please consider looking on the Habitat website and checking out the volunteer opportunities.

In the next few days I plan to post pictures from our current build.

Lucius

On edit: If you're planning to attend Alumapalooza 2013 be sure to check the seminar schedule for an RV CAV discussion. I don't know the day/time yet but I think it will be early to mid week of Alumapalooza.

Great!!!!! Can't wait to see your pictures. I saw Marquette, MI on the build list again. Wish I was going back this year!!!! Habitat is a GREAT way to travel and give back at the same time. Thanks for always being so great about posting your pics.

Let me know when and if you are coming to the Hill Country.

I spend some time at our local ReStore, a division of Habitat. The ReStore takes in gently used building material, furniture, appliances and etc. These items are than made ready for resale. My time is spent in the new Medical division where used medical equipment is made ready for use. Items include wheelchairs, beds, canes, crutches and etc.
The proceeds from the ReStore is than used to fund The HFH.

Keep up the good work! ReStore is a really interesting means of raising money for Habitat. And for those of you who are not able to make a two-week commitment to help build a house, working in the ReStore is a great way to help the cause. Some of the Habitat affiliates we've worked with indicate that much of their annual funding is made possible via their ReStore income.

I promise pictures are coming. I'm having trouble re-sizing the pictures on this computer. These dang things are just too smart for me sometimes.

Do you need to resize pictures to post them? Try using the "Go Advanced" button below the reply box and click on the paper clip in the tool bar at the top of the reply box.

I upload pictures that way and it never seems to be bothered with whatever size I upload.

We worked on a total of four houses in northeast Las Cruces, NM.

The first house is nearing completion. We cleaned, painted, and installed tile in the first house.

The second house is well underway. When we arrived the house was ready for sheetrock. The sheetrock job was quite an undertaking - requiring 8 - 10 people. It took us about 4 - 5 days but we were able to put sheetrock in the entire house and install the metal trim (preparation for the mud and texture) around the doors and windows.

Wow! What a slacker... I still haven't posted the pictures from Las Cruces and it's almost time for the next build.

I need a round-tuit
