Google Earth

Cool way to use this tool; preview campgrounds/areas you plan to visit.
Helps you get an idea of the layout.

We have been to some campgrounds that were real losers...I will google earth new places first from now on!

Some araes have good enough resolution that you can see individual sites...have the site map handy, google the campgound, you should get a pretty good idea of the layout!

preview campgrounds/areas

Bill,
I agree, I have been using Google Earth for this purpose also. Unfortunately, many of the boondocking areas are not available yet in as good a resolution as the more urban areas.

Yep, it is a great way to check out the area at least. I know in one case when we realized we'd be camping on flat, not a tree in sight, area of a campground we were able to call and move to the area that was well treed.

Even some of the high resolution arial photos are out of date. If you go to dmreilly10000 photo gallery, you can see my 1953 Airstream sitting behind my house. The problem is the house has been torn down and the Airstream hasn't sat in that spot for almost 3 years.

Yes some areas have not been updated for awhile, but to keep things in perspective, Google Earth is a fantastic application and the price can't be beat. I believe the images will continue to be updated.

I LOVE Google Earth. I have made many KML files (Google Earth placemark files) with my favortive campgrounds including links to online reservations, notes on favortive location within a park, links to online pictures etc. and HTML code you put in the the comments sections will be reflected when you click on your place mark.

For those areas with low resolution, you can generate KML overlays using B/W 1 meter USGS aerial maps or 2m USGS Topo maps. Here is the website to make this happen:
GPS Visualizer: KML Overlay input form

Just add your LAT and LONG coordinates as a map center, and away you go.

They do update fairly frequently if you take into consideration the total amount of area they cover We use it at work (along with a couple of others) to determine building layouts and access. The most recent update that affected me was the downtown Greenville, SC area. It had been one of the ollllld blurry ones and now is super sharp. But the pictures are still 2-3 years old.

I also use Live Search from Microsoft. Some of the pictures are better, some are not. You can get to it by selecting Maps and Directions from MSN.com or going right to Live Local Search

You can also use the member map. Set it to satellite view. It's the same as Google Earth, with the added benefit of seeing if any Airforum members are located nearby.

I wish we could have a separate pin on the membership map for favorite campgrounds. It could link to a review of the campground.

separate pin on membership map for campgrounds

I don't think you can do that on the Members Map, but you can certainly go to;
Google Maps
then click on the tab, "My Maps", then click; "Create new map" and proceed to enter your favorite campgrounds.
You can click the "Public" button to allow other to find your map.

I have done this for the FCU 2007 Rally Locations.
