Hunting Picture
This picture shows the extent that John will go to get that deer. Here he has discarded the bright colored outfit and gone with the camo look. He has even sought out higher ground to spot any possible deer activity in his area. All this and not a single deer in sight!

Way to go John.
Our hunt ended on Sunday. It was a pretty good year. We took 4 deer for three of us. (we were each allowed two this year) 2 bucks, a big doe and a fawn.
I took the doe and the fawn. Bought a new rifle this year - a Tikka T3 .270 cal. with a 6x9 Leupold scope. Made a pretty cool shot on the fawn. Normally we don't get to shoot much over 100 yds but I was sitting on the edge of an old gravel pit and watched him browse for about a half hour - hoping something bigger would come out. He kept moving farther and farther away and it started to get dark so I said what the heck and pulled the trigger.
It dropped him in his tracks. The following morning I paced off the distance and counted 218 paces. Been telling folks I'm more proud of my shot than the deer.
Oh, just to keep this on topic. Yes we stay in my Overlander. Make big breakfasts in the morning, drink a little ale, barbeque and play cribbage at night. Who could ask for more??
Too bad it's over for us here.
Good luck to you.
Jerry

John glad ya'll had a good hunt, we havn't gone yet. Over the thanksgiving holidays we all go to my grandparents and hunt. There is about 35 of total. Some of us hunt while the others eat. Everybody usually winds up hunting sometime or another though. My son killed a seven point last year and he can't wait till the weekend. I have a good camping recipe for deer meat.
Cut the tender loin into small pieces soak in dales for about 4 hours, wrap a piece of onion around it then wrap a piece of bacon around that. Then grill
It's pretty good. Happy hunting

I have been hunting in my Argosy for 3 years now. That is it's primary reason for owning it. I stay warm and toasty, this year we had temps in the 20's, but I was very comfortable. The hunt was successful, I got a nice doe Sunday with my muzzle loader. I will continue the season with a crossbow.

Rod & Gun Room
Our unit gets used for hunting and fishing mostly now: fishing rods in the summer and hunting stuff in the fall.
My wife bought us a love seat tree stand which was used sucessfully the same day we hung it up.
The freezer is full; I am fat, dumb and happy.

I may regret this later
I went to Target and bought a couple of bags of critter food of corn and sunflower seeds and baited my woods behind my house. Within a half hour four deer showed up. I hadn't done that before. We are having 16+ people over for Thanksgiving and I thought I would insure a deer show. The deer seemed more cautious than usual with two always looking around while the other two browsed. Maybe they know the hunter's bait trick which is illegal in Minnesota but legal in Wisconsin. Even though illegal in Minnesota, the DNR suspects that 2/3rds of the hunters cheat. BTW, baiting is legal for recreational purposes but like I said I may end up regretting it. No more tulips and hostas for us.

It is ok to come out. A lot of people are closet poachers. I used to shoot off the deck before counseling. One day at a time. We are behind you Davydd: Especially if armed.

No Poaching
This is just to make sure the deer do show up as they usually do every day. Orchestrating the show for Thanksgiving for a lot of people. But then the deer may never leave. Besides I live in a no hunting county metro area and don't even own a rifle.

John,
I flew down from TN. and am staying in Texas for Thanksgiving. I'm headed to the ranch Thursday night to hunt Friday and Saturday. They are calling for rain Friday night and Saturday so that may ruin part of the hunt. It was 82 degrees this afternoon so no telling what it will be Friday morning as I sit in the blind. I'll send those Harley pictures next Tuesday when I get back home.

Lyme Disease/Deer Ticks
Davydd,
Please excuse my attempt at humor.
I love to fish at Plum Island, Massachusetts on the coast. They used to say 'do not shoot the deer,' they are beautiful to look at. The residents there have multi million dollar homes and a lot of influence with the government to make it harder to hunt on the island even though there is a national and state park with lots of open land. Well, as you can imagine the deer overpopulated and now everyone tests positive for lyme disease antibodies.
The residents now get wide eyed and say, 'Shoot Them all!'
I love venison hot off the barbie.
We now have a 8' fence around the garden, Guinea fowl for ticks and a yappy little dog to keep the deer away.
Some locals refer to them as rats.

Rob, do you live around here, or just visit occasionally? I am a native and life-long resident of the area. gotta say, your statements are cute, but inaccurate.
the vast majority of the land on Plum Island is federal property...a national wildlife refuge. The residents of the island have no particular influence, political or otherwise, on the deer population there. The feds routinely organize hunts to control the deer population. While lyme disease is a problem in all of Essex County, not "everybody" tests positive for lyme antibodies.
while there are lots of reasons for deer overpopulation, one of the main ones is that the old-money large parcels of land have been sold off and divided up in recent years, leaving fewer places available for hunting. Its people-overpopulation. can't far enough away from a house to shoot a deer.
But anyway...yeah, they are "pests". and now we've got other predators in the area that we never had when I was growing up. keep your cats inside at night, or they'll be some coyote's dinner.
