I've enjoyed this "off topic" stream regardless of whether it has anything to do with trailers, as I enjoy knowing what the other interests are of fellow Airstream owners. I spent two hours this past Saturday on a deer stand, returning near frozen to a warm kitchen and a cup of coffee. My wife and I were standing at the kitchen sink, looking out the back window and across a 7-acre pecan orchard that backs the house. The largest buck deer I have ever seen walked lazily through the orchard and into the adjoining woods - in broad daylight. Of course, my rifle was in the pick-up, unloaded, and zippered into a gun bag. I felt like all the deer in the world had just thumbed their collective noses at me. The irony was funny, however.
Joe, I can relate. I was sitting eating lunch in my cousin's trailer a couple years ago and watched the biggest rack (at least 10 pts) I'd ever seen bound out of the woods through the field next to the trailer. He wasn't 50 yards away the whole time, seemed like it took him forever to clear the field and make it to the clearcut on the opposite side. The whole time I was sitting there stupified, mumbling b-b-b-b-b-b-BUCK! After he disappeared my Dad and Uncle informed me that my Uncle's rifle was sitting behind the door, just had to rack one in...I can still see the whole scene now, 17 years later.
Speaking of memories, I believe I recall providing you a phone number of a fellow in Florida that acts as a broker for northern residents (Florida snowbirds) looking to sell their Airstreams. How is your search for the right trailer/coach going?
Hi Joe, thank you for the phone number, we appreciate your help! I called and spoke to the gentleman, he had three units available. But none fit what we have in mind. He said quite a few had been bought up recently.
I've found one unit we are going to most likely buy. It needs work, but my wife, kids and I like it. I've not been able to make the purchase because of lack of time. Home projects (just removed half the floor in our house and replaced with hardwood, what a job! worth it though!), holidays and now a major family illness are snarling up my free time to go and buy the darn thing. Try and get it over the Christmas break, I hope, it's out of state. Don't want to drag it through snow and slush. (If I was in the great country of Texas wouldn't have that problem, am I right Pahaska?)
My wife was just asking me why I haven't mentioned it recently saying as I've been doing nothing but babbling trailers. Obsessed (crazy?), that's me.
We haven't had our trailer very long. I bought it from the fellow you spoke with in Melbourne. A very large Airstream park down there is being forced to re-locate. Many of the owners (most of whom are from the north) just don't want to deal with it from afar, and the trailers have trickled onto the market. If I could have afforded the outlay, there were about a dozen of them I would have liked to have had. While our selection required very little work, we have had a ball making everything just right for us personally, getting rid of the original owners persona and baggage. My wife is having fun adding a decorating "theme" to it. I believe the term is "kitsch." Regardless, I like what she is doing and I hope you are soon experiencing the rewards of making one your own. Have a safe and happy holiday season while you are at it, and God bless the family member who is ailing.
Thank You for the support and kind words. God willing, we'll have a good Christmas and New Year. Maybe with a new aluminum toy in the drive, I'll keep you posted. Thanks again!
.....was it your father or father-in-law that successfully had surgery? Open heart? Hopefully, the family is on the mend, happy, and ready for the holidays. Now, how about the trailer you were eyeballing? Any closer to a deal before Christmas?
It was my Dad. He had open heart quadruple bypass surgery monday, coming home today. He's feeling much better, even better than before the surgery, which is great. He'll be tinkering with his GMC motorhome in no time.
As far as the unit I'm eyeing, we decided to wait until after the holidays. It was getting too hectic with shopping and my Dad to deal with it. If it's still available we'll get it (I don't think it's going anywhere, it's been for sale almost a year), otherwise we'll continue looking.
Jason,
That's "FANTASTIC news"~!! Be sure to convey our best wishes for a speedy recovery to your dad from all of us here..
Good luck on your new silver toy...<g>
ciao
Nothing like having a "grocery store" located nearby! Really, it's got to be nice to have wildlife located that close and in healthy numbers to boot! How do they do gobblers in WI? They have a lottery system here in MI. I've never hunted them, but have run across more than enough when I used to ride the trails on my bike up north. Seems they've really grown in numbers the last couple years.
turkeys are by permit here, you need to apply 6 mos. in advance.
given current numbers here i don't think anyone would be denied.
by the way, the picture was taken just east of our intensive harvest zone for cwd deer.
they are about halfway done examining 40,000 deer heads for cwd, no new cases have been found. bringing the current total for cwd to 58. 31 from dane county and 26 in iowa county, one from richland co.
