Since California has earthquakes, I wonder what will happen to that "ROCK" when it gets hit with one.
As it is, it looks like it's balanced between 2 walls.

I like the part about the 'artist' saying he looked for years for the 'perfect' specimen... 
I guess it's in reality, just another example of how many 'sheep' there are amongst us in our big cities..."OMG, lets get down to the park to see the big 'piece of art' rock!"... 
I guess I've just seen to many large boulders in my days, and they seem to look just fine out in their natural environment...

I think public art is a great thing and certainly art is in the eyes of the beholder. Sometimes people make mistakes. This is one of them in this beholder's eyes. There was probably a competition and the other submissions must have been even worse.
Maybe if I saw it in person, it would resonate. I have no intention of finding out.

Saw a news story on it and it said the rock has been brought up to earthquake specs which, of course, does not mean earthquake-proof.

I rolled though the Loma Prieta in 1989 and it was pretty crazy. It was a wave motion and it went on for a long time. This was the epicenter. I dont want to be under that rock.. but it is a cool thing to see how it was transported and the amount of people that came together to get it done.. just seems like a goofy place for it after all that work

This is the best article I've seen on it - the artist conceived of this way back in 1969 (didn't say, but he may have gotten the idea while living in the Haight-Ashbury district...). Includes a video of what it's like to walk underneath it. Thankfully, now I don't have to go 'experience' it...

I'm sorry, but I've walked under as big or bigger rocks right here in the blue ridge that were both more beautiful and in nicer settings, and with a lot less sweaty tourists as well...
I enjoy a lot of modern art, but this is not art as much as it's engineering (and no great feat of it either).
The snobbery (is that a word?) can be summed up in this quote from the link above: "To me, it's better than the ancient sculptures because it's not about the power of the gods," said Michael Govan, the CEO of LACMA.
Really Michael??? So the use of large trucks and cranes is MORE impressive than hand carving and moving of gigantic monoliths to be made into sculptures that may have been built for gods but were often also useful as calenders or navigation, and that THEN have stood the test of time? Is that what he's seriously trying to claim? That this beats out, um, lets see, the Sphinx? Wow, this is the kind of statement that turns people off of modern art...
The only thing this rock says is; "we spent a bunch of gas money to move it".
Just my two cents;-)

What the... I'm all for the arts but what a colossal waste of money, man power and time!  How many people in LA could the cost of this eye sore feed for a day? I dig rocks...just like the next rock lover but I prefer them in their natural habitat.
