Doubt anyone is interested reference the Cuban missile crisis but,

(1) US had old Pershing and Redstone missles in Europe with approx 1500 mile ranges. We were moving them to Turkey because it was a very short belly shot to Moscow and population centers.

(2) Russia moved missles into Cuba ( minimal quantity) and waited for the U2 to see them.

(3) Kruschev ran a good bluff on brinksmanship and Kennedy caved in.

(4) They took their few missiles out of Cuba and we stopped moving ours into Turkey. I don't know if we pulled all of them out of Turkey afterwards as I was gone by then.

(5) Then the Kennedy admin lied like hell about what a great job they had done of brinksmanship and acting tough.

Bredlo & Stingray -- Yes, I was just hankering to give Chika a hard time. Might I suggest Google's nondenominational suggestion to give to hurricane relief, http://www.amazon.com/gp/philanthrop...143760-4588753

I really need to get involved with Tuesday "Chat Night." I suspect things are being said about this thread -- such that it'd rather be dropped off the bottom of anybody paying attention to it (or I sure hope so!!). And then if nobody revives it after 2-3 months of ignoring maybe the mods would quietly close it totally -- tighter than NORAD, tighter than Cheney's unknowable, top secret "Raven Rock or Alternative Joint Communications Center inside Raven Rock Mountain near Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., close to the Maryland-Pennsylvania state line and about seven miles north of Camp David." (I'll provide GPS coordinates on request. Attn: Homeland Security -- as a faithful gov't employee I truly don't have anything beyond what is accessible to your average 8th grader with Google access...)

For all the protesters around our country, we should give them a nice warm meal and a free plane ride to Iraq. Send them out in front of our troops and let them plead with the other side to put down their guns and leave peacefully. It might save some of our troops.
Just a thought.
Oh a firend of mine an x-police officer suggest we could help the over crowding of the federal prisions by sending death row inmates, rapists, sexual prediators to Iraq to kill as many bad guys as they can.

You know at first thought I too was totally with this idea, but then I thought about one small fly in the ointment....these folks in jail are in for some serious stuff...there would be no way to get these sickos to only go after the insurgents, moreover the "bad guys (and girls)" are mixed right in with the citizens of Iraq, most of which are hard working, honest people.

Too bad it wouldn't work, cause we could achieve our objective and get some of these folks in jail off our payrolls (feeding, clothing, housing, etc) which also those funds could be used far better than keeping inmates that will never be correctible or have consecutive life sentences......

Sadly enough, America is getting to see first hand what an IDIOT we have for a leader. It's inconcievable that what is going on in New Orleans is happening. Like Iraq, it is clear that this guy has no plan or contigency for any national emergency otherwise there would not be people starving, living in disease, surrounded by dead people stuck in the middle of a quagmire. George was on TV a few minutes ago, what a joke! The jist of his speach, once you get through the "uh's" and the pauses to try to get the brain to connect with the mouth was that he was "looking forward" to going down to New Orleans and that help is on the way. If this nut was half the leader the right wing zealots purport him to be, he would not have been sitting in Crawford playing with the guitar on Aug 30, he would have been doing what he is attempting to do now. Help should have been waiting for the intense part of the storm to pass. It was known before this storm came ashore that it was going to be catastrophic. How many more people have died because of this man's bunglings? But like on 9-11 as he sat, continuing to read the book about the goat while the nation was under attack, he sat in Crawford on vacation.

I know that this is an off-topic subject in the forum, but it seems to me that this thread is really bringing out the not-so-good side in the members here. Remember that it doesn't matter who's in office....all politicians are the same, whether they are Republican, Democrat or Independent. Also remember that the information we are receiving is from the Media, and they only want us to see the bad news, which will make us want to watch more...it's in our nature, kinda like that bad accident you can't help but look at on the highway...In the end you're hooked on CNN or FoxNews, or any of the other stations, thus improving their ratings. When's the last time you saw a day of nothing but good news, by the way?

Before you judge a person, walk a mile in their shoes. I don't like politics, but given the current circumstances, I'd say President Bush, though he is far from being an eloquent speaker, has done a good job of taking care of this country's interests. It's not just his responsibility to take care of our country...it's ours as well, and that starts with us as citizens, going on up through the chain of command, so to speak. Anyone remember the Carter years? I do, and it wasn't pretty back then. Inflation was astronomical, and fuel was still a pain to get in some areas. You might also want to remember that, when the Twin Towers were first bombed on President Clinton's watch, he did absolutely nothing about it. Where was the anger there?

The whole point of states' rights is the autonomy to self-govern. The responsibility of what happened down South shouldn't fall on just one person's shoulders. What safeguards and contingencies did the local authorities of Louisiana have in place for this type of disaster? What about the Governor of Louisiana and his staff? Those are questions I'd like to see answered, rather than just be angry and place needless blame. We're all Americans...well most of us are anyway...and as Americans, it's in our nature to rise to the challenge, in the face of adversity. We should do our part to help our fellow Americans in their time of need. Though I wasn't alive at the time, I think JFK said it best, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country".

I'll grant you that times like these bring out the worst in some Americans, as seen by the looting and shooting at those trying to help. Would someone please explain to me why the President should be responsible for their actions? We should be responsible for our own actions and suffer the consequences of what we do. The fact is that more than enough warning was given to leave the area, and many chose to ignore those warnings. As saddened as I am by the devastation caused, many, though not all, have noone to blame but themselves. I say not all, because I do realize that there are people who had no means to leave.

I really didn't intend for this post to ramble on, but I'm tired of hearing people badmouth the President. I didn't like President Clinton, but he was still my Commander in Chief and as such he deserved the respect which went along with that title. I think that this thread ought to be closed, but by that same token I wouldn't want to stomp on another Airstreamer's right to speak his/her mind. Sheesh, what a conundrum. Nuff said!

I don't agree Paul one bit. First you cannot tie the two (Iraq and the worst disaster in our nations history together).

It would seem that the instant gratification folks are running wild with this one.

If you recall, a manditorty evacuation was given, now I know some folks didn't have the means to get out of town, but that wasn't the case for all of them, making the job even more difficult....add to the fact that the Army Corps of Engineers has been working on the barriers now since the first day it was possible, the people down there have turned to violence (shootings, etc), looting and unreset, posing danger to relief staff, I'm not sure how fast you expect the city to be rebuilt next, but I'm sure you'll find someone to blame for that too when it's all not back up and running in a few weeks....

Bottom line I was in a flood that was not even near what this is, and to get house to house, let alone in there, isn't an easy job by any means. You didn't hear about the tsunami issues? There were plenty there too, but I don't see you blaming Clinton or GW Sr. for those shortcomings.

Perhaps others might offer their Airstreams as living quarters for some of these displaced folks, rather than be a couch coach, be part of the solution in some small way.

I'm with ya Singray.
