Fun in New Jersey --- NOT !!!!

Hi

Off topic since an AS was in no way involved. Interesting video none the less:

It certainly gives you a view of how a sway issue escalates into a major problem. One thing to note right at the end -- the LP tanks bouncing free down the road. Yes, there are a lot of other observations one could make.

It just popped up on the evening news here so I'd bet it gets a lot of attention. Since almost all of the details were wrong in the news report we'll see how that all works.

Thanks. Also interesting that the video appears to have been made by the driver hand-holding the camera IMO -- perhaps another distracted driving accident just down the road, averted by the roll-over in front stopping him!

That is the exact reason I bought an AS. In 2012 I was going camping ( I still used a tent at the time) when we were traveling on route 270 in MD when we came across a box trailer that had flipped for the same reason. After I did my research I determined that the AS because of it aerodynamics was the least likely to flip at high speeds.

Hi

Low vs high center of gravity would have as much to do with it as anything else at the speeds that guy was going. That stretch of road in NJ is pretty slow. Flat floors / all above the wheels and 7' ceilings (in the slide outs) have their downside.

It is a bit interesting just how much torture a trailer hitch will take and not separate isn't it ....

Not sure I'd say it's pretty slow. We've towed our Airstream a number of times up and down the Garden State Parkway, through that very location. I keep it between 60 and 65 and I'm getting passed like I'm stopped. I'm sure excessive speed (excessive relative to safety, if not to the 65 mph speed limit) contributed to this person's disaster.

Hi

I've been through there a number of times. Each time the traffic was at a max of 65 and often a bit slower than that.

Accelerate tow vehicle, apply trailer brakes, then brake TV once sway has stopped.

Anyone tell if there were WD bars or anti-sway bars on that rig?

Brake lights didn't come on - was it even hitched properly?

Hi

I sure don't see any signs of brake lights going on prior to the final swing and flip. Even then it may be the sun flashing off of things. He may not have had the 7 pin connector plugged in if he was braking ....

Possible that the driver was not even aware of the sway until it was happening quickly IMO. Guess we could give him or her credit for not putting on the brakes?

I did not see the TV brakes on at any point either.

Hi

So here's a few more questions:

What's the trailer and how much does it weigh empty?

What's the TV and what are it's ratings?

There's no obvious way to know if they had 8,000 lb of ground beef loaded into either one. Gotta start somewhere.

Gack! Not a minor thing to happen in a wreck. Look at what happened to the propane bottles! I suddenly appreciate how a cover can help. Think I'll make a "garter belt" for the bare bottles on the avion AND for eddie.

Looks like no WD hitch, and tow vehicle appeared low in front and high in rear...so.... Never saw any brake lights. Appears to be short wheel base SUV and 28+ at least trailer, and I think that is a bad set up even if weights are within limits. We had a Tahoe pulling our 25' and immediately went and got a F250 with a long wheel base. MUCH better! Even if the speed limit is 65, why not just be under it for a little more safety?

I thought I saw two loose tanks AND a loose tank cover.

Looking at the video again to make sure, at 21 seconds in, the tanks were dangling from their hoses, and it was the tank cover that went sliding down the road.

That's what I thought too FWIW. Amazing the trailer and tow vehicle stayed connected, as someone else said earlier.

It was caused by the spare tire mounted on the rear bumper!

Seriously, I saw something similar with a boat trailer. It got into harmonics and dragged the truck into the ditch.
I'm surprised the tow vehicle stayed upright.
I watched on YouTube full screen and stopped it. I didn't see a WD hitch, and both propane tanks flew off. At one point both rear car tires were off the ground.
The lucky guy was the small white SUV in the left lane who missed everything.

On a motorcycle we called those "Tank Slappers" and it happened with poorly distributed weight.

Don't believe it is high in the rear until the rollover lifts the back. Looks to me that it had some rear squat initially. The first you can see the TV is in the middle of the 13 second. Sad end. Pat
