If the oil companies are so profitable, how come their stock prices aren't going up? Exxon stock hasn't moved in one year.

Really?

Exxon (XOM) closed at $52.89 on May 9, 2005.
The closing price on April 19, 2006 was $64.30.

That's a retrun of $11.41 ... 21.5% in less than a year. Not to mention the small quarterly dividends paid for each share.

You're right about the dividends, but the 50 day moving average is up less than a dollar.

Let's not pick individual days, too much day-to-day changes.

You're the one who said Exxon "hasn't moved for one year". So if you don't want to pick individual days ... here's the 52 week range:

52.78 - 65.96 ... that's a move of 24.97% ... even better than my first post!

Also the dividend yield provided an additional 2%.

You can't look at single day year to year price moves. You need to use a moving average.

If you look at the gain from March 9, 2005 to March 9, 2006, it was a loss for a one year period.

Just paid $3.05 a gallon for diesel at the T/A Truckstop in Wheat Ridge, Colorado off of I-70. I really pitied the truckers all lined up there. One trucker in line took on 400 gallons. $$$Whew$$$$

I drove quite a bit this weekend highest I saw was $3.05 for regular and $3.00 for diesel, these were in a resort area along the interstate. Prices here in Central NC seemed to have stabilized at $2.90 for regular and $2.86 for diesel.

Congress mandated that an oxygenator be mixed with gas to reduce pollution. MTBE looked like the right solution, so it was widely used. Once it was shown to be a carcinogen, the argument became what to replace it with - since an oxygenator is still required, but a replacement is not widely available yet. Congress refused to limit the liability for MTBE use while the replacement (ethanol, it looks like) worked its way through the system. Faced with unlimited liability, gas producers are halting MTBE use sooner rather than later, creating another pressure on gas supplies. This creates dry land in FL.

By the way, one of these days it may actually be possible to make ethanol using less gas than ethanol replaces!
