Oh, is that their excuse?

BTW, now that summer is winding down all of the gassers are getting the benifit of less demand, but us diesels are stuck for at least a few more weeks...months.

The oil companies have said that demand for gasoline has made them refine diesel into gasoline, thus a shortage of diesel. Now at this time of year the folks in the NE are beginning to stock-up on fuel oil (basically diesel) for the fall and winter so there is high demand for diesel. By the time the winter demand dies down it will be spring and people will start hitting the road for spring break and the demand for gasoline will push more diesel refinement into gasoline.

We diesels don't stand much of a chance. Seems when diesel was a small percentage of the consumer market, diesel was cheaper. Now that diesels have become more mainstream and more popular, the oil companies have begun to capitalize on the market and come up with excuses that run from every kind of increase in domestic demand to the emerging China and India markets. I wonder how many Chineese and Indians actually drive diesel cars and trucks anyway...I know its a greater percentage than in the U.S., but in countries where the average income is less than $100/month, how many can actually afford them?

Off of soap box now.

When I posted the $3.29/gal price of ULSD above, I should have pointed out that the price of the former highway diesel fuel in CA, LSD, was $3.39/gal in San Diego on 08-18-06. At least the price of the new diesel fuel is not more than the price of the old fuel two weeks ago!

Moderators, it would be great if the other cost of fuel thread:
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f42/what-cost-fuel-your-area-3527-6.html
be combined with this thread…
and even greater if the combined thread be moved to the more appropriate forum:
Towing (Hitches, Braking, and Vehicles).

Thanks
Bill

Unbelieveable Timing

We're getting ready to head out to Yellowstone for a two week trip and the price of gas has gotten to an almost respectable $2.59 for unleaded.

Orange County

Not surprising, here in Orange County, California, we are seeing lower prices, but there are still a lot of stations well over $3.00 per gallon for anything that runs a vehicle. If you look around, there are a few selling regular for $2.79. On the other end of the scale, Diesel (ULSD) is averaging around $3.25. There are rumors that someone paid $2.50 a gallon for regular, but I think those are just that, rumors! It cost me $120.25 to fill up my PSD with ULSD. By my calculations, two years ago fuel was roughly 10% of my cost to buy/maintain/insure/run my truck, now it is closer to 22%.

Diesel and (gas for that matter) are nuts in my part of the world. Yesterday cheapest gas in town was Costco $2.67 for reg. unleaded. Cheapest diesel was $3.19. Diesel over the lest couple of years in Eastern Washington has been running about 30 to 60 cents a gallon higher than gas. When you have to pay 50 cents a gallon MORE for diesel than gas its no longer cheaper to drive a diesel. It is so bad here our state senator is looking into price fixing.

Sam's Club dropped under $2.00 over the weekend. I think they are at $1.99. Many stations are around $2.06 with diesel about $.50 higher. Someone reported that prices at some stations went up today to $2.35. Looks like it's time to take the van over to Sam's and do the big fillup.
