Most of my posts are for asking questions, but this time I decided to take a break and post for fun.
We bought our first Airstream last year and we love it. We took it on a 30 day vacation traveling through 6 states and putting on a bit over 5,000 miles. One of the very first things that we noticed is that Airstreams are quite the head turners. I couldn't even pull into a gas station without folks complimenting our trailer. I honestly gave a few tours at "gas stations" and "rest stops". At campgrounds, it was as if we were putting on our very own Airstream RV show. Yes, I am a very approachable guy, but the attention was quite amazing.
We just returned from this years 30 day adventure. Because of the financial crisis in our country, I have cut back our fun money, so our vacation this year was much more conservative. While we put on less miles and spent FAR less money, we still had a great time.
Regardless of modifying our vacation for this year, we still found that it was so easy to turn heads and meet many good folks. Only this year, we added one more curiosity..... a duck. LOL
Yes, you read that right, we took a duck on a camping vacation.
The ducks name is Frosty. She is a 3 month old Khaki Campbell.
I raise several breeds of ducks, geese and chickens, mostly for fun. We presently have 62 birds. A day before we were to leave on vacation we noticed that Frosty couldn't walk or stand without falling over. I knew that if we left her at home, the chickens would have killed her, so I figured that if she had to die, she could die in peace with us.
Frosty traveled in a small dog crate in the backseat, right next to my 2 1/2 year old German Shepherd dog, Falco. When camping, Frosty would hang out in a small portable fence, at night, she would sleep in her crate on the dinning table. I think she liked camping and playing on the beach the most.... I always do.
So now, if you think an Airstream draws folks to your campsite, try a duck. LOL
Falco and Frosty gave folks many good smiles. The kids in the camp loved them both. Falco naps next to Frosty's fence as if he's guarding her. Falco is on an all Raw diet, much of it is chicken, so I am not certain that he doesn't see her as his very own emergency picnic basket, but he has certainly taken on her well-being as one of his responsibilities.
I only received one negative comment.... at least it was a very negative tone. One holier than thou very snotty lady asked me why I would be so cruel as to bring a duck camping. I simply told her that I liked duck and that I liked it fresh. She looked as if she was going to faint and moved on. LOL
Here is the best news. After the first week, Frosty started to stand for short periods of time, then one day she began to walk again. She is now quite spry and hanging out with her buddies..... and I think she now has a boyfriend.
Ok, I might be bird crazy, but while I give these birds the best life they can have, they are not all pets and safe from the freezer. I have named a few special birds that are safe, such as Elvis, Fred, Lucy, Beethoven, Armed and Dangerous and..... Mabel--after my grandmother.
Should our economy completely collapse, some of the birds, with politician names, could find themselves at the table. Obama for Christmas, Pelosi for Thanksgiving, Reid on Halloween and so on. To be fair, I have also given some of them republican names. LOL
Frosty will never make it to the freezer... she has graduated to the status of an Airstream duck. AND I have learned to speak duck. As we would travel down the road I would quack and Frosty would return every quack. I don't know exactly what I was saying in Ducklish, but it seemed to keep her entertained. Oh, she seemed to like both Country music as well as Classical and Rock & Roll.
So, when you think you're all packed and ready to head out---remember the duck....... ;>)
