free (vintage) 8-track tapes

Found a stash of 8-track tapes in our "new" 1975 Excella. Haven't gotten to the point of checking out electrical yet, so don't know what condition they're in. If anyone wants them, will ship them out (asking only for postage). Here's what we have:
Elvis C’mon Everybody
Billy Joel Songs in the Attic 1981
Elton John 11-17-70 Take Me to the Pilot, Honky Tonk Women, Sixty Years On (Part 1 and conclusion), Can I Put You On, Bad Side of the Moon, Burn Down the Mission (Part 1 and Conclusion), My Baby Left Me, Get Back
Mantovani Christmas Magic 1980
Original Hit Performances! The Middle Forties/The Early Fifties Columbia
Kenny Rogers’ Greatest Hits
Styx Pieces of Eight
The Sound of Stereo, 1975: Henry Mancini, Al Stewart’s Museum of Modern Brass, Harold Wheeler Consort, Marilyn Maye, Imperial Jazz Band, Jack Jones, Frankie Carle, Sonny Rollins, Duke Ellington, Peter Nero, Gil Evans Orchstra, Lena Horne
Merry Christmas Songs: 29 All-Time Favorites Walt Disney Studios 1978

If you want them, please PM or send an e-mail. (Maybe we should just toss them?)

Nancy

Oh my. I still have my 8 tracks down in a carrier in the basement. Remember quadraphonic sound? That short lived 8 track system that allowed 4 speakers to each have a separate music channel? I had a Motorola unit in my old BW bus. I'd slip in my Santana tape and the sounds would go round and round. Was quite an effect. I still have the player and the quad tapes in the basement.

Last year I refurbed a nice, home stereo 8-track player for the specific purpose of dubbing my wife's collection of 8-track tapes onto CD-R. Unfortunately, every single tape had gone bad with time.

Each tape would start out okay, but within a few seconds it would start dragging.

We were able to pick up 6 large boxes for $1 each at an antique store. We were sorting through them when the neighbors saw the lights and came over. The four of us spent the evening sharing memories and playing songs. We are keeping around 1/2 of the tapes. There are probably 100 that have never been opened.

What a great evening.

Unfortunately I'd probably have the same problem. One of the problems with 8 track was the tape against tape friction which usually caused them to fail after a while.

I've had a reel to reel Ampex recorder and still have most of my tapes, including some prerecorded ones. I tried to dub them off and found that the oxide had separated from the backing only to make a gigantic clump on the tape heads.

Lots of memories lost there.

the previous owner was obviously a fleamarket junkie as evidenced by this extreme mish mash of drifty droll......

Y'know Jack, just when I'm feeling pretty good about life, you come along and remind me that we're just getting older than dirt... quadraphonic stereo indeed... my roommate in the Navy had a quadrophonic stereo... it was HUGE, and had components inside that glowed... but what sound!!! Ahhhh, yes... 1975... It was just yesterday...
