We looked at this concept at the show also. Neat little vehicle. We didn't see any rivets though.

I wonder.. why is this called Airstream? It has as much to do with the original Airstream idea as a jerry can.
And the interior.. completely nonsense design.

We saw it at the Detroit auto show last week and it is really eye-catching. The paint is probably the most interesting part since it looks like chrome. Wheelbase looked a bit short for towing much though.
There are lots of photos and a great video at:

I still think it's pretty cool. But then again, I'm not that worked up about WBCCI. I can't even find my unit. They exist only in the WBCCI directory; don't return phone calls, don't show up where the posted meetings are supposed to occur, and I guess don't want any more members. Oh well; our renovation project benefits from the wisdom here, not in a defunct WBCCI unit.

There was an article in my local paper about it. It has a tempered glass grill which incorporates the headlights and decorative lighting too. Is powered by Fords hydrogen cell/lithium-ion battery powertrain. Goes 25 miles on battery then hydrogen cell kicks in. It plugs into household current. Detachable rear cameras replace side mirrors. And has a 360 degree tv monitor inside with rotating images. Wow!

Ford Concept is mutualy exclusive
Cute -and I agree they missed some style opportunities. VW had the same
trouble with the concept remake of the VW Bus.
The big problem I see is they missed a major opportunity by not creating
a tow vehichle. Any crazy and wealthy AS enthusiast would be dying
to get ahold of an AS compatible tow vehicle. I would just love to see
one of those combos rolling down the road. It would be the best rolling
advertisement ever for the vehicle and the trailer.
I'm not implying that AS enthusiasts are wealthy by any means. I'm
fulltiming it and on the road though, I am amazed at how many of the
people who drive the fullblown bus coaches priced well over $200K seem
to love a shiny AS. I think a Ford/AS combo could entise some of them.

Here' a link to a televison report on a zero emissions vehicle from Ford plus a reporter talks about the Ford-Airstream and video of an infamous AS traveling on a highway. I think its a GM as a TV. Click on "Peggy Fox Reports" On second thought, looks like a Ford for a TV.

Let's see now... Ford posts record losses...Ford and Airstream spend a year dreaming up this "concept"..... Hmm-- could these events be connected in any way???
Hydrogen fuel cell? Wasn't there a fuel cell explosion on one of the Space Capsules way back there in the 20th Century??
Wonder what would take place if a "concept" and a motor bike collided?

I had on my Airstream t-shirt at the Detroit show and didn't want to hang around the concept too long in case somebody would think that I had something to do with it. It is so ugly in person I was embarassed that it had the Airstream name on it. I think that the concept has potential but it just doesn't come together as a whole very well. The window shape and the red trim color are the biggest problems to my eye.
It mistifies me how Ford gets design so wrong when as a parent company it also has the design resources of Mazda, Volvo, Jaguar, and Land Rover?

New Airstream? Tow Vehicle
...it's not what you're expecting - it's a FORD!
Ford Airstream Concept
Based on a trailer design that dates back to 1931, the Airstream Concept is
nonetheless powered by a decidedly modern hydrogen hybrid fuel cell
powertrain. Inside, a cylindrical, 360-degree video tower ups the interior's
warmth factor when utilized as a virtual lava lamp or campfire.

i have seen pictures of this on other sites and the first thing that came to mind to me was "danger, will robinson!" it is really cool, but it sure isn't my idea of an airstream. just my opinion. i would love to have one, though.

Oh my Lord, that is one HIDEOUS vehicle! I can imagine, like with many concept vehicles, the essence of it will be diluted down so far by the time it reaches production that it will be a silver minivan with cool mirrors, a tiny lava lamp accessory that plugs into a data port, and burgundy accents in its tasteful taupe leather interior.
I am sorry Airstream feels the need to dilute its rock-solid brand and reputation with these ventures. I am very familiar with marketing (MBA with a concentration in marketing and about 16 years' experience in the field) and the need to stay fresh to appeal to "today's" consumers, but I think it could have been done in much more effective (and profitable) ways than rebadging an SOB and partnering with an auto maker on something other than the perfect TV or maybe toad. I would LOVE to see Airstream work with Ford (or other manufacturer) to make a perfect TV that complements the trailers (proper towing package, accents and trim that tie in with the Airstream design theme, etc.). But not to make something that seems to mock/cheapen the brand, no matter how "cool" it is.
One major tenet of marketing is to identify your core competency and build your business by enhancing it. That is how so many companies get into trouble--they branch away from their CC into something "cool" or "a great money-making venture" and end up losing everything by straying too far from what their company does best.
Sorry about the rant! Just my personal opinion and my two cents.
Susan
