Florida DMV denying license
Hello everyone. Tried of the hassle from Fl. DMV. Due to the "new laws" the Fl. DMV will not issue me a Fl. drivers license even though I have resided here since 1968. My lady and I have a 31' AS and unloaded everything that wouldn't fit into the AS., this past year. Thus, no permanent address, no utilities bills, no renters or mortgage bills which the DMV says you must provide if you want to renew your license. Your old license doesn't count as an ID. In addition to the utility bills, one must also provide your original SSN, birth certificate and hard copy proof of your permanent residence. My po box is not acceptable, etc. License expires in a few weeks.
I've read were one can get a permanent address, tags, and license on line from a mail forewarding service in Tx. or So. Dakota but you have to go to that state within 90 days to take your actual license test. Great, if you have plans to visit So. Dakota at this time of year. Anyone know of any other way to beat this ridiculous and police state mentality insanity? Thanks. JK

FYI, this isn't Florida - it's the PATRIOT Act. You should've seen the hoops I had to jump through to add my fiancee to my bank account - we BOTH had to provide picture ID, despite the fact I've had an account there for over 10 years.
When I moved to Maryland in 2006, I had to bring a copy of my birth certificate to the Maryland DMV - the VA driver's license I was surrendering wasn't sufficient.
None of that really helps you, I know. Sorry. I've wondered what full-timers would do when this sort of thing came up.

I would think that you park the AS somewhere and that is your permanent address, your site number and lane become the street location. Even if you rotate park to park every week. Your utility bill or rent is the park bill which includes utilities.
What does your old license say on it for an address? Flat Rock NC? A lot of folks live in their trailer or MH or quonset hut in campgrounds year round.
If all else fails keep driving, you'll probably never get stopped and if you do, plead ignorance the license expired whaile traveling the country.
Americans have the right to the pursuit of happiness, there are some technicalities now a days.

It is going to become harder and harder for Full Timers to get a renewal.
More and more states are considering anyone without a permanent address to be a Terrorist.
Here in NJ I have to prove my life history while illegles just step up.
Where are you registered to vote? That ought to count as an ID

This is Patriot Act stuff and it is likely to affect everyone who is fulltiming and doesn't have a permanent address - like me. Liable to be lots of people driving around without a valid license - but then are they going to allow license plate renewal if you don't have a valid license? Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

FL DMV
January 2010 - Information of Interest
REQUIREMENTS IN EFFECT: Documentation requirements are in effect for Florida residents wishing to obtain a driver license or identification card. Those wishing to obtain a new license, legally change their name prior to their renewal date, or immediately replace a lost or stolen license or ID card will be required to visit a driver licenses office and show: 1) identification, 2) Social Security Number and 3) residential address (two items). Those simply renewing may do so by a convenience method, via the Internet or mail, one time between office renewals.

Hey JK;
I feel your pain. The state of Florida really yanked my chain a while ago.( DMV frustrations thread ).
You will be dealing with a bunch of nitwits. If you're not getting the correct answers try another person.
Have you spoke with your insurance provider yet. Maybe they can point you in the right direction.I'm sure they have run across this problem by now.
I drove around for 3-4 months without a license to operate and was still insured, crazy

If you renew by internet this time, you will have a couple of years to find an address, ss shouldn't be a problem.
To get a passport a birth certificate or your certificate of Citizenship is needed.
It comes down to you need proof you are here legally and have a residence.
Sure hope you don't get caught without license and paperwork, maybe they will be able to use mugshots for identity. ;-( and county jail for address.

That's not entirely true. Any Florida resident with a Florida CDL is required to appear in person for any changes or renewals. Also, in order to get a CDL in California, you have to have two utility receipts, a current lease in your name, birth certificate, Social Security card, and submit to a criminal background check, then take a vision test, DOT physical, and driving test in a vehicle that meets the requirements of the license you need. If you want a class A CDL, you have to go rent a semi tractor to take the test with. My Florida CDL that I've had for almost 25 years, with a safe driver notation, is not considered anything more than a way to get to the DMV here. That's per the examiner where I went to get my license changed, so unless he was just trying to get out of work and sent me away to get a bunch of stuff I didn't need, it's turning into a real hassle.

OK, So I'm slow...
Are y'all saying that these requirements are being forced on ALL states by the Feds or just Floriduh? I kinda understand why Floriduh would want to make the requirements a bit stiffer because of the income tax situation there (notice I said I kinda understand). But, I had my license renewed here in Ga just a couple of years ago and all I had to show was my old license. No power bills or any of that other stuff. Number three child just got her first license over the summer and I think all we had to show was a birth cert. I mean, I'd hate for us to have to show Sgt. Schultz our "papers" every time we get on the bus. What gives? A new way to employ bureaucrats?

Terry is this some thing new? My understanding is that the CDL program is maintained as a Federal data base meeting Federal rather then State requirements. I transfered my CDL to Washington and the only issue was my Haz Mat endorsement. Again the requirement for Haz Mat retesting is a Federal requirement. I'm curious if this is something new or if you just ran into a guy having a bad day.
By the way when I moved to Washington my motorcycle endorsement was not transferable and I had to go through the retesting process. That was a State decision and it has since changed to accept existing motorcycle endorsements.
Cheers, Dan

Is NY that much different than all the others?..driver license good for 8yrs, walk into DMV get new photo, give them your drivers license, get temp, pay thru the nose and 'yer done.... if the USPS can find you.
Maybe after they figger out how to vote down there they can work on resident services.

Think that is bad, rusty rivet and I wanted to open an additional checking account recently. We have banked at this bank for over 30 years. We have 3 checking accounts, a savings account and VISA card thru them. In addition Jim managed that bank branch for 12 years before changing careers. We still had to provide photo ID. And they asked us a million questions. But since we had so much with them, a lot was already there. What a pain. In years past if we wanted to open an account, I would just bring home a signature card and return it. How times have changed.
We also have the new rules for getting new drivers licenses. To get around the permanent address. Rent an apt for a month and then you will have a address. too bad we have come to that, but unfortunately that is the way it is.
try to remind myself that some of the inconvience is "worth it" to protect us from "whatever".

How are the homeless gonna get operator permits? Do you need a license for a shopping cart? What about all the foreclosed upon? and the illegal immigrants?
what has the Alfred E Newman lookalike done for you lately?
big brothers watching all of us, it's about time we give him the one finger salute.
