For all the flamingo fans out there, Target Dept Stores has a whole line of flamingo dishes, coasters, serving dishes, etc. as part of their kitchen spring line. I purchased the cookie jar for my Bambi (see pic below) for just $14.
The cookie jar is the CUTEST, but I need to book over there and see what else they have, so thanks for the heads up as to where the thing came from!
Oh yeah...I forgot to mention...Target even has little flamingo lights on a 10' string that would be perfect for the vintage awning. Be sure to report back on what you buy! Inquiring minds would like to know!
They have flamingo placemats, towels, potholders, bug-food covers, beachtowels and other things I cant remember. Flamingos must be hot as catalogues are showing up with a lot of flamingo stuff like door wreaths, tee shirts and purses, flip flops, planters, coaster sets, clocks, ones with real feathers (yuck), stained glass, finger towels, afgans.... it must be the year of the flamingos! silver suz
oh..also windsocks, regular socks, wristwatch with dangling flamingos, anklets, nightshirts, regular shirts, jelly spreaders, lit flamingos whose heads move up and down, wow...you get my point, eh? silver suz
I think, in the retail business, flamingos are chosen as this year's featured animal- like the cow and roosters were for a while. It's just us airstreamers who associated them with the whole Wally Bynam creed of getting on the move and seeing new things. Those who didnt have airstreams went en masse to florida to retire- and what a wonderful symbol of getting away from it all than the exotic bird, the flamingo!
Thid year's retail is also pushing neon pink, lime green, and turquoise- and the flamingo just fits in perfectly. When the flamingo makes it's way into the cross stiching magazines, then we will know the fad is almost over. silver suz
Thanks for that link to the history of the pink flamingo. I flamingoe'd a friend's lawn as a prank on her 40th birthday. Lawn flamingo pranks make a good fundraiser; the high-school aged daughter of another friend was offering lawn flamingo'ing for a fee, then for another fee, she would leave a note at the flamingo'ed site offering moving the flamingoes to yet another person's lawn of their choosing.
It's a little complicated to explain, but it was a great fundraiser. You can get pink flamingoes at Oriental Trading pretty cheap.
You know what's gone up in price? Disco balls!! I bought one at Target for $9 two years ago, now they're $20 - $30!!!!
