First freeze: Taking bets

Today is August 23, and the weather radar shows a low pressure system heading into New Mexico from the west. Assuming the current track, this means that we should have northerly flow in two or three days, calm thereafter.

And that means we should have our first freeze of the season in Angel Fire along about Monday night, give or take a day. Anybody want to take bets?

Oh, Airstream content, of course! This means I'll certainly need to winterize the rig before I head back to Angel Fire in September, when the freezes will turn into hard freezes. I've got about a half gallon of the pink stuff at home, so will need around another two gallons. Saw it at WallyWorld earlier for close to $3, so here's the stake: Six bucks says the first freeze is early next week.

Lynn

PS: I just checked the Weather Channel, and they are betting against me. Ha! Little do they know!

We were pretty close this morning. It was 35 out, and the stormy clouds haven't even departed yet. (The lowest temp will come when the clouds and breezes from the low pressure system depart to our east.)

We could use some cool air in our direction, instead of these tropical storms that are headed toward us.

I didn't realize y'all cooled off this early in the summer...

Vine ripening of tomatoes goes out the door once they encounter temps as low as 40-45°. Does that mean that Angelfire-eans must count on farmers' markets from lower altitudes? What can you garden up yonder?

Count your blessings up here on the toon-dra. (he said, wiping the seed rolling down his chin)

Gardening tip we use in the South.

When the Fall temps dip to the mid 40's we pull our tomato plants up by the roots and hang them upside down in the carport, garage, or shed next to a window. Most of the green tomatoes will ripen out on the vine.

Good eats...

But until frost does come we do this with our extra tomatoes.

Fresh and canned salsa. Listening to the lids pop from this mornings batch.

Should I be planting snow peas and iceberg lettuce in November?

I sure know that Lynn sees cold temps earlier and later than most of us here on the forum. We've just had a couple humid Georgia-like mornings, but we have started to have the occasional dawn in the 50s.

Oh, if you have a greenhouse in Angel Fire, you can do tomatoes for a while, but the growing season -- last freeze in early June, first freeze in late August -- is too short to fiddle with them outside. Aspen and wildflowers and pines are a different story.

Oh, that's expensive stuff, too much for my cheaper palate! (How about two-buck Chuck?) Alas, the soil up here isn't too well suited to vines, I think. Maybe. Who knows? But given the plethora of vinyards lower down, I suspect it wouldn't be worth the try.

Oh, and I think my bet is probably lost already. The weather system that gave us rain earlier doesn't seem willing to move out. Shucks. I was hoping to get somebody else to buy some pink stuff for me.
