FEMA Trailers

WOW, look at all these trailers!

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - A year and a half after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, FEMA is auctioning off at fire-sale prices thousands of trailers used by storm victims, raising fears among mobile-home dealers that the government will flood the market and depress prices.
Mobile home dealers are finding that some potential customers would rather wait to make a deal on a used FEMA trailer than drop $25,000 to $40,000 for a brand-new one.
"People think they're just going to get to buy them for nothing," said Gale Crews, owner of Diamond State Mobile Home Sales in Hope, where FEMA is storing 20,000 trailers at the city's airport. Some of the FEMA trailers will sell for less than half of what they cost new.

I remember when I was at our Airstream dealer and FEMA was there buy every SOB they had. Was a great day for all the SOB trailer dealers and now they are pissed because FEMA is selling off some of its inventory! Too bad they didn't buy any Airstreams!

I heard that what wasn't on the dealer lots got thrown together in a BIG hurry....I know how the SOBs are built normally and would shudder at the thought of picking on up, even at half price.....

I live in FEMA trailer land, New Orleans.

1. If they did not sell them off then they would waste taxpayer's money.
2. Most are not travel trailers they have no tanks.
3. They were junk the day the were built.
4. They have been abused.

A few of the early trailers which were installed were nice travel trailers but the rest are not worth much, maybe a hunting camp.

It's unfortunate that there's no thought of the impact on the manufacturers. At the same time ultimately the taxpayer is on the hook for maintaining them and making sure there's some value obtained so it's a double edged sword. It will be interesting to see how this works. What they should consider is having the dealers sell them on FEMA's behalf. And hopefully the dealers and manufacturers were aware that this would happen when they were selling everything they had and put something aside to carry them through this period. Just my thinking out loud, and I could be way off base.......................

Barry-

I don't think you are off base at all. The dealers and mfg.'s, Thor included thought they hit the mother lode. And they did, but did they not think that sooner or later they would have to deal with the units being back on the market? Any first year MBA could have seen this coming!

Having the dealers sell them on FEMA's behalf would just lay another layer of cost onto the units for the taxpayer to cover. Dealers had no problem making a profit from a disaster when they sold the units. The next thing you know dealers will want a law passed that you can't sell you own unit used.

Thanks Jim

Yeah Jim, I think you are right. Why add another layer. They did make their bucks when they sold them the first time around.

Go to gsa auctions. You'll see what shape these things are in. Missing tanks appliances water stains. they are going for $1500.00 and up the highest I've seen is 3 grand.

That picture does not do the reality of the situation justice. On 59N in Purvis, Mississippi are hillsides full of them - these are the ones returned or never used. Pieces of $4!& is what they are.

I had one friend get a FEMA trailer delivered this past year, he was so excited. Bought 3 acres and had septic, water, and power installed at his expense on his cleared land. New trailer showed up, they were installing it for him when he put his remaining posessions inside and went to work thinking that night he would be in his own space. That night he went "home" to a frame and axles - all his clotes, what was left of his furniture, and pictures along with all his paperwork BURNED to the ground. Short in the electrical when they hooked it up - toast. JUNK

People will buy them - the temporary guest workers all scrounging for a place to life.

BTW - there is a market for 30# propane tanks here that get lifted from FEMA trailers.

Exclamation Industry perspective

I have some friends that are involved in the RV industry. They told me many stories about FEMA approaching EVERY RV manufacturer (glad they missed Airstream) with a set of plans for what they called an 'ELU' or 'emergency living unit'. Most of these were slapped together in the quickest fashion to fill the demand from FEMA, and they are all garabage!! The RV manufacturers pumped out as many as they could and FEMA took them all!

I also have a few buddies who are RV techs that are on contract with FEMA maintaining these junk boxes. I have been told many horror stories about the construction problems, hook-up problems like those described above, and the worst......the abuse that these ELUs receive from the inhabitants!!! Stories that would make you sick to your stomach!!!

I would not set foot in one, let alone pay anything for one, knowing what I know now.....not even to be plopped down as a hunting cabin for ocassional use.

NONE of these were built to RVIA specifications and none carry the RVIA certificate near the door like your units do, and most are NOT ROADWORTHY either......BE FORWARNED!!!!!! THEY SHOULD BE SCRAPPED!!!!

I was told that the gov't had paid up to $70,000 for the 15' wide x 56' - 60' long. Any person could of bought one for $39,000. Another $600 toilet seat... you are right.... so sad....

It's not always as it seems

We ( the wife, Mr. Ernest P. Turbo & myself ) again worked the month of November 06 in Biloxi, Ms & I saw many units sitting in place with tires, axles, propane cyl and other items missing. Most units had but one small window and showed signs of weather wear. Sitting close together on small lots, amonst debris yet to be removed, they appeared to me to be a dangerous fire trap. It's a shame what has happen, but one does need a roof and four walls. These units were a quick and sorry answer. One must understand that the effects of the personal usage, does not always reflect the units total sad conditions. Some is due to the effects of poor construction, weather, etc. I'm not real sure what my unit would look like, if I had to go the storm, no money, no home, no job, no future. We --the taxpayers--did the best we could, in the short term. Sadly there is STLL years of recovery ahead.
Best,
