Fall Foliage

Do you have any pretty leaf color to report yet?

Here's a neat map showing current fall leaf color...

We are heading out looking for fall color this weekend. We will be driving up to the Arrowhead of Minnesota, through St. Paul, and hopefully returning via the River Road along the Mississippi. Internet sources for northern Minnesota indicate that maples are peaking and other color coming along. Your map above seems to tell the same story. I think we'll see a difference inland compared to the Superior shore line. We'll report back as we go along. Any other fall trippers heading up that way? We'll be camping at the municipal harbor park in Grand Marais next week. Would love to meet some of you around the campfire and make it a mini Forum Rally if anyone else is around. ~G

Minnesota is peaking right now on the North Shore. Here is a Monday afternoon view from Cascade River State Park Lookout Mountain.

BTW, there were two Airstream trailers in the Grand Marais Municipal Campground. One looks as if it is a long term tenant. The other pulled in on Monday.

My full North Shore report with 25 photos can be found at Roadfood.com.

Davydd, your photo tour is outstanding! Your GM campsite looks like the one we like to stay at with harbor views. Great North Shore scenes and mouthwatering food shots--the Angry Trout, the Pie Place...favorite stops of ours too. Four more days and we'll be on our way. By the way, after the bridge collapse, will we have to make other plans than our usual route through St. Paul to head up toward Duluth? What would you recommend? (Sorry, don't mean to make a major hijack of this thread!)~G

If you are coming up I-35 just take the I-35E branch up through St. Paul instead of I-35W that goes through Minneapolis. Highway 280 with a makeshift upgrade is taking most of the I-35W traffic.

We spent the weekend at Ironcity campground. Near Mount Princton in Colorado. Aspen in full range of just starting through some already dropped. Great time to see the Aspen.

Few brook trout in the beaver ponds but I left them there. Little snow last night and below freezing each night. Highs in the 50's during the day. Saw two A/S and camped next to a nice young couple with a '78' Tradewind. Minuet will be winterized now the full use season is over for us.

Think we're about a week away from some great color here in the mountains of Western N. Carolina. Maybe two.

We've just come up the upper Mississippi on the Great River Road--gorgeous trip! Maples ablaze from LaCrosse on, great drifts of reds, oranges, and gold. We now are on the North Shore, Lake Superior: maples are past and the aspens are spreading buttery gold everywhere. If you ever have the chance to drive up 61 along the Mississippi, changing sides of the river as it pleases you, you'll find a feast for your eyes. In the fall, during harvest, the fields become sculpture, beautifully carved sweeps of corn/beans/alfalfa meandering the curves of the fields. Every family farm is neat as a pin with many barns and outbuildings. The farmers must mow every third day to maintain the look! On the upper river, outstanding bluffs tower over the river and the river itself sprawls or narrows or braids through islands. I've lived near the Mississippi all my life but always passed over it, never drove along it. Truly a great drive. `G

We are presently camped in Baraboo, Wisconsin on our way to Indianapolis. It hasn't come close to peaking here. There are just a few flash hot peak spots along 1-94 between here and the Twin Cities.

Monday we will be in Brown County, Indiana, one of the most beautiful fall foliage spots in the midwest but I suspect we will be there before the peak.

In Southeast Ohio, where we normally have KNOCKOUT color in the hills, we don't expect much this year. Color is determined by warm days and cool nights but this year the nights have been way too warm. The leaves don't like this sequence and will gradually turn brown rather than go through the colors. We're very disappointed as we live in the middle of the color areas We can make book that high color will be the weekend closest to Oct. 15th.

But, according to the specialists, it'll not happen so well this year. But then, we all know weather people that have made an error. We'll watch and see as we get thousands of "peepers" coming down from central Ohio (Columbus).
