Serious Bird Watchers in Tow

I have to admit that Nancy and I are serious Bird Watchers. We have the Audobon Guide: All the Birds of the Rocky Mountain Region by Richard Pough. He also has a book on identifying Rocks and Minerals. He knows his rocks and minerals, as well as Birds.

Nancy loves Hummingbirds. They are very curious when in the Boondocks and red is a color that attracts them. Some in the Gila Wilderness of New Mexico will sit on your hand and taste an apple you are eating. They will also fly over to you and taste your nostrils and your open mouth. No kidding.

I love Costco Chickens. Roasted. For $4.99 it will make three meals and the book is $7.95 that Nancy uses.

Chickens were not included in Richard Pough's book. Obviously a big error in judgment. Turkeys are. Chickens are not.

I also like Turkey. The Casinos slice them thick, add mashed potatoes and sweet corn and I am one happy camper.

Kinda reminds me of ALF's comment, "I love cats. Pass the plum sauce."

Heard they were bringing the ALF show back. Should be a riot...or a total bust, depending on the boldness of the writers...

Cobra 427 Ford as a Tow Vehicle?

I just put a For Sale sign in the window of our 25 foot International Trailer.

Instantly a couple appear driving an expensive Cobra Ford 427. Obviously they have no concept of the value of the dollar, when you have a 'potential tow vehicle' that costs that much. Obviously movie stars or a retired politician.

They had been considering an Airstream, but the newer models were too shiny and still had Goodyear tires. The light film of dust gave ours a look of being used and I also pointed out some rocks stuck in the tire treads as from Pike's Peak. Well, close to Pikes Peak as the parking lot was in Colorado Springs.

"Well... I said... this one is an upgraded Airstream with 16" Michelin tires and hand made 16" wheels from China". The Swedish Refrigerator is excellent and imported. ...and this went on for some time, using information found on this exact Air Forums. All pretty valid and some a bit fuzzy... but interesting, non the less.

Because the Airstream had so many custom improvements, before our purchasing, we had about $4.12 out of pocket expenses to tweak it out, it was going to be a bit expensive for the average customer. You know, Walmart shower floor mat and a $1.99 brush and dust pan matched accessories, kind of stuff.

******
Now that you made it this far... you make up an ending. I had a great one, yours may be better.

Tent to Trailer... to Tent?

We tent camped comfortably for years with an ice chest, five gallons of water, DCell battery AM/FM radio, provisions in the back of the pickup and two flash lights. Never had an issue.

Rough road. Two rut roads. Highways. Interstate Highways. Walmart.

Now with a 25 foot International... Spending hundreds to thousands of dollars in taxes, plates, insurance and maintenance, so we can listen to the radio and have several LED lights over a table at night.

Tires are too stiff, causing damage to the trailer. Hitch is not set up properly, causing damage to the trailer. Tow vehicle is too wimpy, too over kill to tow properly. Brakes need to be adjusted often and tested and... Wheel bearings in the trailer need to be checked, rechecked, temperature checked, loose bearing check, smell check...

Heat will delaminate the formica from the table. Fantastic fans will get noisier over time. Batteries go dead with or without use. Things fall off while traveling on or onto other things that fall off.

The tent and sleeping bags are rolled up in the closet. Cost is zero to store. Trailer camping may be a bit too rough for us.

Those Tent Camping Days are now just memories. I am too busy keeping my trailer from corroding, rusting, filiform and maintained so I can use it, if I have time to...

Regarding the hummingbirds: interesting you mentioned that. We were enjoying our Alturas Lake campsite Saturday and watched a hummingbird that seemed to be admiring it’s reflection for a few seconds then hovered by the red tail light a few more seconds.

I read a short story the other day.

I was towing our Airstream while reading it.

In Colorado they are everywhere. I used to sit outside with my drink of choice, vodka and cranberry. Since the hummingbirds are attracted to red nectar, I often imagined a bird sipping my drink. Since it already has a respiration of about 1500, I can only imagine a tipsy hummingbird. Probably crash.

The Periodic Table of Elements in your Family are getting into the heavier elements. Lucky you!

Aluminum at #13, I would pick Titanium at #22 as the next for you. In twenty years you will have a lot of little 'electrons' flowing in and out of your 34 footer.

Senior or Junior Management Failures... anywhere

Many companies have a predetermined 'Senior Retirement Age' set for everyone.

I do not want a 78 year old as a Captain on my International Flight across the Atlantic and he is the Junior member of the flight crew.

I do not want a 9 year old painting my home, or my brother, thinking about it.

I do not want a 28 year old who is unable to bend over and pick up his cigarette butts, Bucky Cheeseburger wrappers, loose wood screws and damaged rivets assembling MY trailer. (Sorry... I emphasize MY for good reason. Get in line.)

I do not want a Warranty that is based on Time, BUT Use of the trailer. Time waiting for repairs should extent the warranty period on the BACK end of the trailer warranty, not the FRONT end which has no tail lights and always seem to operate. (You will have to think about this one a bit more than you have.)

I would gladly pay extra for a Electronic Mileage Odometer on my Airstream and a warranty period like my Ford or Toyota Trucks. Which have bumper to bumper warranties. Not a hitch to bumper limited what so ever goes sour... warranty in the first year or two of use.

I do not want a Senior Manager who knew Wally Byam personally and wants all trailers built to the same standards used during the... 1950's. Although, maybe there is something good to consider in this part of the dialogue, so put a hold on the Separation Papers for a week or two to understand the Chain of Posterior Kicking.

All I ask is that when I pay for my (fill in the blank) trailer is that I will never have to speak with the Salesman again, visit the parts department again, schedule my life around having major and minor repairs made at any Dealership, again... and please, when I call the manufacturer about a warranty part that has fallen off my wonderful trailer... that they send me the part and not think I am building another (fill in the blank) trailer in my... basement.

Yes... I am among the Senior Class of Airstream Owners.

Yes... I recall the bad breath of the Drill Sargent facing my nostrils. Yes... I did learn something in the Army. Everything a recruit knows, flows down the ranks into a Black Tank and it goes AWAY... if you... learn from your previous mistakes. Otherwise you and Sarge will become very good friends in a couple months. There are two ways to look into a... Blank Tank. You chose which one works best for you. A Motto for 'new employees'.

I bet Airstream Quality would be perfect if Sarge was not... a Senior. Me... 1969 to 1970.

Thank goodness it is time for Nancy and I to play our evening Pinochle card marathon!

Pinochle Card Games while home or on the road

At Home:
Nancy since January 1, 2018 UP 31 games, down one, from 32 games, since last night.

I won last evening. 1200 to 590 points. We play to whoever gets to 1,000 first. Tricks are 10 points. For some that is 1 point. We like the big numbers.

In Trailer camping:

I am ahead, but when we cleaned out the trailer, the tally sheet was... mysteriously... missing. I was up less than 10 games.

Anyone who has not played TWO person Pinochle, it can be played with eight 9's, 10's, Jacks, Queens, Kings and Aces. (TWO decks with cards of these suites pulled.)

We play with Plastic Casino Poker Decks that are in two colored backs, brown and green. If you need a particular card, like a second Jack of Diamonds (brown back), I am looking for a brown backed card and will take a chance when one comes up. The Jack of Diamonds in my hand would be a Green backed card. Adds a bit of 'adventure' in our play. A Double Pinochle (Diamond Jacks with Spade Queens is 300 points)

Over time the Backs of the individual cards will wear. Usually higher value cards have a wear spot in the back. We call them 'scooters'.

It is a joint, sophisticated way to... cheat. But it makes it entertaining.

Every evening. One game. Nancy will not tell me how she choses her cards. One tough card player. I have not told her about MY green/brown card system. I think she will know... sooner than later, now that I have given up my slight advantage.

Spanish Dagger discovered in NW Colorado

Most visitors pick up unusual items and take them home.

I tend to leave items, taken from home and leave them in special places.

A Spanish dagger of 17th Century style and, no doubt, origins is to be found and discovered in a hundred, maybe five hundred years from now. It is stuck in a crevice in sandstone in a cave, not seen by the average wandering nomad or Airstream owners from the 2016 Wyoming Adventure. Well... probably true, as this is in NW Colorado.

Its value is nominal in today's currency, but let the corrosion and weathering enhance the already museum quality of this artifact of possibly a movie set or some iron worker copying antiques to sell to amateurs that are easily taken for every cent.

Look very carefully. The handle is seen against the background. It can be yours. The sandstone is not to be found, just anywhere in Colorado. That is a great hint to those of you with ambition and a beer in hand.

There will be, also, a four foot sword to be... rediscovered... soon this Summer. Our next trip will be placing this sword into a similar permanent residence. The history books of the Spanish Conquest of North America will be tossed out the door when these fine pieces are found and described for decades.

This excellent sword will most likely find home in the High and Dry Rocky Mountain Region... maybe Utah, as they need something of interest that is new and as wonderful as this dagger in Colorado.

Let this be your... Fake News for the year 2546AD.

Reminds me of the B.C. Cartoon strip where one of them digs a deep pit, drops a wheel into it, and announces, as he buried it, “we’ve just advanced 5,000 years past the invention of the wheel!”

It is not the guy that invented the wheel who should get the credit, it's the one that invented the other three.

Good Driver's Poll: Airstream and Towing Magazine

(About time some fresh material is coming in!)
*******

A Good Driver’s Poll was started by 'Airstream and Towing Magazine' members.

There was startling information. 99.9% rated themselves as among the Best Drivers towing an Airstream.

After rereading the question in the ATM survey, the question was arbitrary and confusing.

“How do your rate yourself, over your Husband’s towing an Airstream.”

I had misread the question and was the only dissenting vote.

A Winner is Born every Second in Las Vegas

I was going to Las Vegas, Nevada on a business trip. All expenses paid by the company.

After checking into the Casino Hotel, I was given complimentary coupons for Buy One, Get One Free… the BOGO booklet.

As I was wandering around the Casino Gaming Floor, I browsed through the BOGO offers.

- One nickel in a Video Poker machine, get One Free Play.
- Bag of Pop Corn for $6, get One Bag Free.
- Make a $5 wager on any even money wager to win $5.
- Win a custom built Airstream Trailer as shown on Display in the Rotunda

I always wanted an Airstream, so began to ask about where is the Rotunda? After going to the Player’s Card Information center, I needed to have a Player’s Card to get the Coupon to enter the Rotunda. The nice lady quickly had me registered and pointed at the Casino Exit. It was just outside the Casino Entrance.

A beautiful Airstream was on display, rotating every sixty minutes for all to observe each minor detail of expert workmanship. I wanted it. But how?

The man behind the booth handed me an aluminum rivet and asked for $5. Well… OK… as I handed the nicely dressed man $5 and received my aluminum rivet. “What do I do with this aluminum rivet”? I asked.

"You hand it to the guy over there with the pop rivet gun.” I handed my rivet over and it was quickly used… POP. I was given a coupon with a number. “… and what is this for?”

For the drawing to win this Custom Airstream.

This drawing will be held as soon as we have sold all of the rivets at $5 each to cover the cost of this Custom Airstream under construction.

How long will that take?

You are the first person to enter. It may take awhile… you are also responsible for the storage, upkeep, insurance, maintenance, taxes and license fees if the winning ticket is yours.

I asked for my ticket back… just as another potential Airstream winner handed over the pop rivet to the guy next to the Airstream on display…

A Winner is Born every Second in Las Vegas. Winning an Airstream may require more time.
