EZ Pass Overcharging

This is to let you know that several EZ Pass transactions will likely be overcharged when using EZ Pass.

The Delaware Memorial Bridge in south Jersey will charge any car and trailer combination as a truck and will be $2.00 extra for a 2 axle trailer and $12.50 extra for a 3 axle trailer.

The Route 78 bridge between NJ and Pa will charge $11.65 for a 3 axle trailer when the charge should be $1.50

The Maine Turnpike has charged as much as $22.00 extra for a tri axle trailer.

As a good rule you should not use EZ Pass while towing unless you know the tolls are correct or unless you like to ask for credit after each trip.

The Bay Bridge at Annapolis and the Peace Bridge charge correctly.

If you know of others that overcharge please add your comments.

I wonder if I'll still get the discounts when hooked up since I'm on the comuter plan ...

I use EZ Pass all the time. But I have never had a trailer behind me. Do you contact them when you plan to have a trailer tow, i.e. updating your vehicle information?

No, you don't need to conntact them. You can't use all of the high speed lanes (some say no trailers so read your signs), but it registers and counts axles as you pass. I've never looked at my bill to see what I was charged though.

To use EZ Pass while towing you have to register the trailer with them. The overcharging seams to only be a problem with the named agencies while towing a trailer. Their systems are set up to count axles and even though the account has a RV trailer registered it will charge you as a commercial unit with that number of axles.

A simple mistake designed to overcharge those that do not watch their accounts. I have talked with the Delaware River Memorial Bridge people 3 years ago and they acknowledge they know of the problem but have no intentions to correct it as it is a major money maker so you have to pay cash or ask for the credit each time you tow.

Can't answer that question. I would advise you to tow and pay cash to establish the correct toll for each agency and then use EX Pass and check the bill. The Pa turnpike dies charge correctly as far as tolls but frequently has you entering or leaving from the wrong exchange. To get a credit from Pa turnpike you have to contact them directly as apposed to contacting you EZ Pass agent for all other credits.
