Economy, Detroit, Now Swine Flu

If it is not the economy and the auto companies going under;
now we have Swine Flu.

The last thing we need is a pandemic.

The gov't might restrict travel ect.
That would really hurt the RV business.

The 90's look like the good old days.

Economy, swine flu, and all bad things

The choice today is mine... Worry about what I have absolutely no control over, or do something about which I can control nearly 100%. Fortunately it is my attitude I struggle with and not the outside issues. So, after I have beaten myself up, I decide it will just be a good day and go on....Msmoto...

And the earth quake in Mexico, California and Yellowstone swarms. Hope we get to Wisconsin to weather the next months. A total of 644,000 were unemployed in Michigan in March, 2009, compared to the 388,000 unemployed in March 20, 2008, and that's before the next 21,000 from Pontiac and its subsequent trickle down effect.

Stressors are up certainly.

Anybody old enough to remember the first Swine Flue pandemic of the 1970's? Do you remember that the gu'ment had a problem with the vaccine? They made all of us in the military take the vaccine to prove to the public that it was safe. It worked like a charm, I got sick as a dog (or is that a pig?). So, since I had it already, that means I can't get it again, right?

I'm on 24hr call right now with the Red Cross Diaster Team in Lorain County. We have 1 confirmed swine flu case, and 2 more pending.

Scary stuff, but our leadership has been training monthly for a couple of years for this.

Let's pray it gets under control quickly!

More on Swine Flu

OK, we can do something about Swine Flu... from the CDC Web Site
CDC - Influenza (Flu) | Swine Influenza (Flu)

What You Can Do to Stay Healthy
There are everyday actions people can take to stay healthy.
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.
If you get sick, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

And I am going to try to follow these when I pull out tomorrow for New Orleans and Houston...

Avoiding contact with people is a very good strategy. That's why I am sitting in the customer lounge in Jackson Center with people who have come here from all over the country. No one looks sick yet.

IMO, intensive factory farming due to strong demand for cheap food is to blame for swine flu, bird flu, etc.

Yes, Msmoto, you are absolutely right. Be responsible, take reasonable precautions against all known dangers, then get out there and live your life the best you can. No hunkering down, here.

The flu virus mutates regularly. Swine flu has been around for a very long time, long before factory farms. By now it could be called human flu. Some viruses do jump from species to species (ebola, HIV, are other examples) and sometimes have to do with farmers living closely with livestock or hunters keeping live animals at home, a frequent occurrence in Asia and Africa. Factory farms have other problems, such as excessive use of antibiotics, but I doubt there's any connection with this virus.

From time to time there is a flu pandemic and some of them are much more dangerous than others. It's too early to tell what's happening with this one. Obviously it has spread fairly fast in Mexico, but the statistics coming from there are highly suspect as they always are at the start of something like this. Flu this late in the flu season is unusual and it is possible this will lessen in the summer and come back strongly next Fall. It is encouraging the cases in the US are mild.

Yep! My position got cut and in 10 more days I am officially unemployed. I refuse to get panicked though. I have some money set aside, and low overhead. Since I don't own a home I can really stretch out my money. I can also look for my type of work from anywhere with internet. So, how am I planning on coping? I am going camping. Oddly enough, I have discovered that traveling the way I do is actually CHEAPER than staying where I am. That means financially I am better off fishing my way through the crisis. With any luck something will turn up before the money runs out. I really feel lucky that I can not only weather my personal crisis, but do it in some amount of style.

Rodney, I don't know whether to feel happy for you or not. Certainly you have a good attitude. Good luck!
