eBay scam

Today my parents came in second in an Airstream auction on eBay. After the auction closed they received an email asking them if they would buy the trailer for their last bid price. This sometimes happens when either the winning bidder backs out of the purchase (or more commonly, when someone has run up the action to get the highest price out of the real bidder and then the seller offers the item at that price). The email came from someone OTHER than the seller of the trailer.

After looking at the email, my parents talked with the owners who said the trailer had sold to someone out of state and they were picking it up this weekend.

Odds are someone was lurking around the auction in an attempt to get the loser to think they could buy the trailer by paying them. eBay buyer beware.

They should report the detail to eBay. Send as much detail as they have. Otherwise who knows who else that scum has contact that bid on the same trailer. These people doing this are thieves and should be treated appropriately. Scammer is too polite for someone who is actively attempting to steal money from others. Any time we can sick eBay on them may be the time that eBay is able to actually locate them and take legal action.

Certainly can't share this information with enough people.

Watch out for scams when you don't win an auction on ebay.
