Doug's Memorial

I heard from Faithworks Ministries in Brunswick, GA, this morning about preparations for getting something in place from the funds donated to them last spring in Doug's memory.

The delay has been due primarily by the fact that Karen's House of Hope, which sheltered us, was run by Faithworks Ministries but owned by the hospital, and has been permanently replaced by Nunnaly House, a purpose-built facility. Larger, newer, can provide more in the way of services....all those good things, and still served by the wonderful folks at Faithworks Ministries.

Nunnaly House has been open and in use since early summer, I believe, but has just completed landscaping the new grounds. We are thinking permanent benches and perhaps a magnolia tree.

I love the idea of benches in the garden, also a magnolia tree.....the magnolia being the state flower of two of our favorite states....Mississippi and Louisiana.

So, for those who donated, or are otherwise aware, and have been wondering what was going to be done with these funds, this is an update. I have stayed on top of this, just have had nothing to share since June or so.

For those who are scratching their heads and thinking....what????....see the Pray for Doug thread in the Off Topic Forum.

The last couple of weeks have been very difficult, and I have been working to try to restore my sense of peace and equilibrium.

Asking for help with this, and for something to help me regain a more positive focus....doing some concrete planning for a permanent, useful memorial seems to be the answer to my requests.

I'll take it.

Some benches and a magnolia would probably be a very nice memorial, and a comfort to people who are staying there. It sure sounds like a fitting memorial to me.

I thought so....and with a little "in memory of....and with gratitude to" something.

I think I know just the person to create that little "something".

We really wanted something tangible and useful. A little bit of Doug living on to provide some comfort to others.

I like it.

The hospital has agreed to this bench, in bronze, with a single memorial plaque, and Faithworks will get it ordered from the donated funds.

I had hoped that Dan Miner/Miner Metals might be able to do something, but singularly producing this looks to be prohibitively expensive. Dan is also very busy with a couple of big projects.

The 6' bench seemed most useful, and it will go in the gardens at Nunnally House.

I'm very pleased with this.

The remaining donated funds will go into a separate fund at Faithworks, to assist travelers in financial need who are stranded due to a medical emergency....thinking a tank of fuel, etc.

A tree in addition to the bench would use up every penny, and so are going to do a stranded travelers fund, instead.

This could have been us, were the situation different.

Once this is in place, I will post a picture. I will be in that area in early March, and am hoping it will be in place by then.

Thanks to all,

Maggie

I have been thinking about you quite a bit lately, Maggie. Energies are at work.

The bench is a great idea and I really like the idea of a traveler's fund. These are wonderful ways to remember Doug.

Be well and be at peace, my friend.

Maggie, a wonderful tribute to Doug (and to you, I might add). Looking forward to seeing you at Alumalina. Hugs! Barry

That is going to be very nice, and I'm sure much appreciated by folks who are going through rough times.

Thanks, all.

Hard to believe we are coming up on a year, already.

I'd like to think Doug will drop by that bench once in awhile, sit a bit, offer comfort to others, and reflect on the enormous and incredible kindness so many here and elsewhere showed his wife and family during and since that terrible time.

I hope he is at peace. I ask him to be so, as he can't come back, can only settle in where he is.

The bench is ordered.

The plaque will state "In Loving Memory", have Doug's birth and death dates, and "A Traveler Passing Through".

trav·el·er noun \ˈtra-və-lər, ˈtrav-lər\
: someone who is traveling or who travels often

: a person who moves around from place to place instead of living in one place for a long time

That was us.

Very nice, Maggie. I especially like the "travelers fund". You just never know...

Hi from AZ. . .next time I visit my friends in Waycross, I'll go by and visit him. We have a memorial bench at WCU in Cullowhee, N.C., for my son's mother. It is some comfort to him to 'visit' his Mom there. thanks for posting. best, Craig.

Lily and I are in Brunswick, and will be going by Nunnaly House sometime this next week.

Today is Doug's birthday, always angst-ridden for him because his Father died on the 15th, the day before his 4th.

This year, they are together.

Such a wonderful tribute. I think of you often and look for your post. I would like to think I could have a tiny amount of your strength if this happened to me and mine. It is hard to believe it has been a year already. God Bless.

Thank you. All of you.

It would have been a much different experience without the support and love of this amazing community. Could not have done it without you.

Coming up next......a photo of the garden where the bench will reside.

It would be wonderful if it arrived before I moved on, but Faithworks has promised to send a photo if it hasn't.
