DOT banned shiny Airstreams?

hey guys ,i was talking to a old truck driver today and we were talking about rvs. he was driveing a class c. i happened to bring up airstreams and remodeling and he said that airstreams used to be real shiney years ago but dot had airstream to tone them down because of complaints. he said they used to reflect the sun and at night headlights was a real big thing.
i know that the 79 i had years ago was shiney on the sides and the 71globe trotter ihave now was shiney on the sides. anyone ever hear of that?

There were several factors involved in making Airstreams not shiny, I don't think ICC or DOT had much to do with it. There are many semi trailers with stainless steel and polished aluminum bodies, and I have never seen one pulled over because it was too shiny. Think "milk tanker".

I think shape has a lot to do with the problem. A cylindrical surface, such as a milk truck, doesn't have a flat surface, so the most it can reflect is a straight line, and that is usually a few feet above the sight line of any motorist.

On the other hand, the rear of my '59 Tradewind is perfectly flat, and angled directly at the eyes of any following dirver. Even if I do polish it (someday), I won't polish the rear panel.

Can you pull an Airstream in the dark? In 7 years of pulling I have been able to avoid it except on very early mornings in the winter.
