My Magellan in the truck is "Maggie."

The GPS in my Genesis sedan is "Gennie."

Hi, I had to turn down Georgette's volumn, she was getting too demanding at times. I have no control over my Nagi-gator for reasons that I need not explain.

We called ours "Jill" after the voice selection in the Garmin. Until we got an update she would pronounce "Heritage Highway" Heritid Highway. We gave her away to the daughter in favor of our iPhone.

Yup, we too dumped the Garmin and now use our IPhone5 exclusively.

At least you don't need to recharge it!

But I've found, as a solo traveler, that trying to drive and read a map is dangerous; I prefer a GPS that talks to me, so I can keep my eyes on the road.

We call ours "the GPS"

However we also call our trailer, "the trailer" and our truck, "the trucK".

I save my imagination for making trips to fun places.

Yes, and in strange places you don't have to take eyes off road to hunt for street signs and addresses. This became sooooooooooo clear to me last summer in Ireland and Scotland. Between driving on the left side of the road, sitting in the right seat and shifting with my left had (first time for me) and learning clockwise roundabouts and other traffic patterns....the GPS with voice was INVALUABLE!!!!!!

We called ours Simon after you know who for a while since he seemed to know everthing. But after I found myself argueing wth him way too frequently, we changed him into a nice British lady and since I'm well trained, I keep my mouth shut and do as I'm told. Works better. Less stress.

My wife called our old Garmin GPS "The Crack Whore." The directions it provided were questionable at best....

Ours is plain old "Mrs. Garmin" or sometimes "Mrs G!"

The latest model we bought is the type that accepts spoken instructions and so the first command I programmed in was to change the message that triggers voice recognition
to be "Wake up Mrs Garmin!"

Bubbles, because one of my sisters had already named hers' Buffy. Bubbles does fairly well, although she always takes exception to the route we take around Chicago. Bubbles vioce is almost always off, unless I'm alone and trying to find someplace I've never been to before. More often than not, we use paper maps.

Update.

Hi, when I retired my Lincoln from towing duty, Georgette stayed with my Lincoln. For our new F-150 I bought another Garmin. This time a 760 RV GPS. We named her Caroline because she was shipped from a GPS store in South Carolina. My wife thought that Caroline was sweet, so her name became Sweet Caroline. Caroline is much smarter than Georgette and she is working hard right now on our cross country trip. She still makes silly mistakes, but overall she's been great.

Does your GPS have a name?

Fun to wake up old threads like this one.

Gertrude. We're considering "Constance" though because it's constantly wrong about something.

"Make a U-turn 300 feet ahead" Gertrude, have you seen Rocinante back there? U-turns are out of the question. Give it up, girl!

"The speed limit is 35 miles per hour." - just as we're passing a sign that says 45.

"Turn right in 500 feet." Gertrude, seriously? It's a muddy dirt track with a chain across it!

And our personal favorite: "Exit right in 500 feet." So we did, only to find that Gertrude had taken us off the road we needed so we could drive into "downtown" Bremerton, WA, just as everyone was leaving work at the Navy base. Guess how many good ways there are to get out of Bremerton. *One.* Worse: as we sighed at having followed another of Gertrude's now clearly incorrect instructions, we noted a car literally flipped on it's side and fully involved in flames on the other side of the road, with every car in Bremerton stuck behind it as they all tried to head home from work. Not one of Gertrude's better days. Oh, and yes, Gertrude has full traffic data so she clearly knew about the mess she was about to get us involved in. Maybe it's time to call her "HAL."

"Give us the fastest route to the campground, HAL." "I'm sorry, Dave, I can't do that."

Queue up that scene from "The Office" where Michael drives into a lake because the GPS told him to turn right.

More often than not Gertrude is right, but when she's wrong, she's spectacularly so.

We called our Garmin "Judy". You have to be our age to get it.
