As texting has come up on this thread, I'll post that while I no longer FB as I mentioned previously, I find texting invaluable. It is simple and eliminates lots of wasted time talking when all you need or want to convey is a small amount of info which you then have a written record of. You do really need a full qwerty keyboard to do it efficiently.

Hacked first of Feb 2012
I have received several virus packed Emails this AM.....all from Friend Airstream Forum members. These same names are on my Facebook page so there is a possible link there too. Don't open that attachment from a friend without extreme caution. ( I am going to miss out on some great jokes because of this.)

The benefits of using Facebook far outweigh the disadvantages, for me at least. Facebook provides a handy single point through which I can keep in contact with friends and family all over the world, sharing photos, news and the like. As with many Internet related applications, though, I assume that anything I put on Facebook is automatically in the public domain so I don't put anything up that's even vaguely sensitive. I do understand that Facebook needs to turn a profit and it's presented as being free to me, so I know that there's a trade off with things like advertising, but I'm a big boy, I can deal with that. Anyway, I like to think that I use Facebook rather than Facebook uses me.
The Facebook debate is similar to that which arose when I was doing IT support in the late nineties and e-mail was beginning to take hold at work. A lot of people wanted off the system because they were getting e-mails that they didn't think were relevant. My argument was that you should use e-mail to your advantage and ignore and/or delete anything that you felt wasn't relevant; it isn't hard to do, after all. However, many people felt that they were obliged to read and retain every last piece of junk in their Inboxes and I couldn't dissuade them otherwise. I couldn't get rid of the image, though, of these people opening and reading every little bit of junk mail that arrived in their mailboxes at home and then filing it all away for use later.

This is how I do it: Facebook is for my friends and family, I keep the security fairly tight on it, and I rarely post anything that can be tracked (no phone numbers, no addresses, etc), but I will post locations and my schedule. I do treat everything on it as public, though. E-mail is for private stuff and I keep the filters pretty tight. Blogs are for the world to see freely, so no addresses, I tend to post where I WAS, not where I am, and I rarely use full names and stay vague on whereabouts of people, as well as making sure places in pictures and children can't be traced either, so I don't gift friends with a robbery or a kidnapping. Forums I treat a bit like blogs.
All tech is just a tool, and you can choose to use it or be used by it.

Ever since Inland signed up on facebook, we are bombarded with solicitations from all to many places, companies and the like, that keeps the delete button active.
Even daily proposals from singles and hookers seem to flourish.

Parrots are succinct because they don't have the vocabulary.

Bob, you gave the thread it's name. We are just answering the question.
And the answer is…
No. Forum is more than enough of the social network thing for me.

Keep in mind, if the product is free, then YOU are the product they make revenue from. Notice those ads on airforums? Weird how they are related to things you recently googled or vendor sites you've visited, or even keywords on the page you are viewing!
There are a lot of interesting groups on facebook for me. Like hiking, biking, camping, Airstreams, vintage trailers, national and state parks... Just don't put anything in the 'system' you think is less than completely wide open & public.

NO,
I also don't paint my SS No. on the front of my house, and I don't put my picture on my mailbox. If I want someone to know what I'm up to, I will tell them personally. Yes I am grouchy old

Dang. I'm beginning to feel left out. The few offers I get are on the far right side of the page, which makes them easy to ignore, and never any from hookers or singles. I can't even remember getting an annoying volume of junk mail from Good Sam's Club either. Of course, this could be a memory problem on my part.

I use Facebook daily. It has been a great way to connect with old friends. Over the past 18 months I have gotten together with some of my old high school buddies that I hadn't seen or spoken too in over 40 years. I also find it a quick, casual way to stay in touch with friends in general and more specifically friends that have moved out of the area. A little barb now and then, a photo here and there, share a bit of music or a You Tube vid., perhaps a news article, I follow the D.C. local weather blog, the VAP, Vintage Trailer Supplie etc. etc., Fun, quick. Like Zlee said use the filters, I don't do games nor do I see any of my friends game requests. I can block folks easily if need be. I would never post my phone number, email address etc. on there. In the end, anyone who wants to, can find out that info anyway (not that you should give up and be stupid about it). A number of my Airstream buds are on there. Also, I try to keep it fairly light and try (hard as it may be) to avoid politics!

BTW, the "offers", I barely notice them, the take up little space anyway. I haven't noticed anything lewd....maybe I need to work harder on that! I do like the new timeline feature too, as I can see what other folks are posting.

I haven't seen the new Timeline feature, though it's supposed to be forced upon me in the next couple of days. What I do like is being able to take part in various groups or business offers. One of "mine" is British Parts Northwest, which puts on a weekly special via FB. Through it, I managed to save nearly a hundred bucks on a new brake booster for the MG!

Just remember how intrusive Facebook and Google are. They will learn as much about you as they can. And they will get your friends phone numbers from your phone if you have FB on your phone. I intend to drop Google Gmail at the earliest convenience , not trusting them anymore either.
