Well I spoke too soon. Got asked again just today. First time in over a year. You'da paid good money to see the expressions on the face of the family when I opened the rear hatch! That was what finally convinced them it was new and different.

It just happened AGAIN!

All I had to do was post about not getting asked...

I'm at a mega-campground with over 900 sites - MOO! And when I pulled into the gate, the man doing check ins and outs said "Wow, that's a Classic, isn't it? (Which I was going to correct by saying "No it's an International with the special Eddie Bauer upgrades.") Then he asked, "What year is that?" and my reply "2012" nearly floored him. I toured the campground later and didn't see even one other Airstream. It's not that there are so few, it's just that generally Airstream campers prefer more remote locations.

The darned place was nearly full so I got stuck way back in the hinterland primarily occupied with Canadians in small caravans and tents. I only opened the hatch to try out the fit of a mosquito net surround I'm making... and boy did that draw a crowd.

Unfortunately it's rained so much I haven't had it open for 3 days.

Yes...all the time; and then they want a tour. Imagine their surprised looks when we open up the rear hatch!

I just removed three lines of those vinyl letters/numbers from our Safari and they just peel off. I used a fingernail to get them started and then just pull--they tended to stretch out but just keep pulling and they come right off. Really easy!!

We are asked fairly often whether "they" still make those, but worse yet was the guy at the dump station with the tall white box who asked if my husband (6'2"") could stand upright inside!! We were so amazed....

Tall Story

My buddy Ian P. recently bought a new International Serenity. He chose the International for it's sliding door overhead cabinets. For a very tall person, the swing out doors of the overhead cabinets are a considerable hazard for getting a whack in the head.

I recently showed the trailer to someone who was 6' 8" and he was pleasantly surprised that he could stand erect. His hair was nearly brushing the ceiling though.

If you invite Kareem Abdul Jabbar to lunch in your Airstream, serve it on a picnic table outside.

I got 2 compliments at a gas station in Cherokee, AL yesterday morning.
I've had countless compliments and given numerous tours since I arrived in the campground yesterday.
I even got a "You don't see those much anymore."

We were chatting with a fellow outside of Camping World last Sunday who had brought his beat up 5th wheel in for service. He asked us what we towed, and we told him that we are going to full time in a Classic 30. His first comment...
"They still make those???" We assured him that they are still made and I would bet our new Classic will be much nicer than his 5th wheel when it was new.

We have recieved a couple passing compliments at CG's, but almost none at gas stations and such...I think maybe as a 31 year old with an airstream I may be less approachable or something?

I have gotten the "do they still make those" comment...I think 3-4 years ago when I first was starting to consider a travel trailer and a friend plugged airstream, I had a similar though like that swirling in my head as I could not ever recall seeing one on the road...and still rarely see one.

PS - the EB comments about the hatches above made me chuckle!!!

all your comments ring true to our experience, yet at Glacier National Park Fish Creek Campground there were six Airstreams of various vintage and length. Even though 70% of all manufactured Airstreams still on the road and with the lone factory building under a thousand a year the rarity factor is real. Its a nice feeling.

Hey Pharm... You should have some wicked fun with your age and Airstream Ownership. Tell people you and your wife were celebrating your 30th wedding anniversary by getting the Airstream.... "and look what the hell happened!!!! (pointing to your son and your hair and teeth!) "Aluminum works better than Viagra Every time! Is my wife a red-hot hottie, or what?!"

Actually 2500 a year are produced, and factory claims that their current backlog is 1100 units....

"Do they Still make those?"

Still not that many AS's of any vintage on the roads. In a recent trip from the Toronto area out to the Bay of Fundy and back I only saw one on the road....but a huge amount of ginormous 5th wheels. Probably something to do with a small amount of AS dealers in Canada but interesting none the less.
