Wow, that would pay for itself mighty quick! I might spring for one too.

I also found a wifi locator site here: www.jiwire.com

But that little keychain thing is tempting!

Let me know how it works, I want one! Are you going on any trips soon where you can try it out on the road?

I don't have a wireless laptop. I actually bought it to quickly check out our wireless access points here at the Convention Center and Dome. But since you reminded me, I'll pack it away for the trip to Mackinaw City. I'll be interested in see how much is available in the area. I know our campground has an Internet Cafe with PC's and also has wireless available.

I don't know if its free through. That's the bite. Some locale's its as high as $10 and hour. Here at the Convention Center its free for our visitors.

FWIW

I have in the last 30 days purchased 2 PCMCIA wireless cards one is 802.11b and the other is 802.11g. I paid less than 30 bucks each for them.

Target and Walmart are getting out of selling the wireless stuff so they were on closeout.

Good to know that. The 802.11g cards are the way to go. Not everyone has 802.11g access points at this point but the 802.11g PC cards can run at the slower 802.11b speeds if a g site isn't available.

Don't get caught up in the derivitives of 802.11g promising even higher speeds (and higher initial costs) unless you have the matching access point installed in your home or business. The greater speeds are attained by using different compression schemes which only work if you are using matching wireless cards and access points.

One other interesting point. Some 802.11g access points slow down to 802.11b speed if a PC comes onto an access point, using an 802.11b card. Problem is every one is forced to slow down even though you may have a g card. One way we deal with that is by using access points that have both b and g cards installed. That way the b users do not affect the g users.
