You might eat up their bandwidth uploading, but it is probably site specific as to if they will let you. Virus attacks would be the same as on any network based on the firewall if there is one, and your specific virus protection. The email virus can get you anywhere anytime, if you are not cautious.
I also highly recommend using SPYBOT to get rid of the spy programs you always get when surfing the net. It will amaze you --- what you will find on your harddrive...be sure to do the upgrade after you download the software.

I have spybot, but hadn't updated or run it in months...whoa!

Anyone: do cybercafes object to your using their electricity? My battery is completely useless and no replacements can be found, even on ebay or using a direct Google search by my laptop name: Micron Transport Xpe in case you think you can help...

Mike ... you win a sausage for your sighting.

Yep .. that was us ... sorry I took so long to respond to your post ... but after Medford .. we lost our Internet connection with Verizon until we reached Eugene (today).

The night after you saw me ... we spotted another AS ... looked like a 25 Safari ... parked at Pear Tree overnight. The next morning .. they were gone. Sorry I missed them.

There is 34 Limited parked about 5 spaces down from us right now. Looks like I'll have to go be friendly for a while.

Ingrid, most laptop makers use more-or-less standard batteries. You, or someone with a little technical knowledge, can remove the battery, copy the info from the label on the battery, and check a few battery supplier's websites. You should be able to find something.

Add the Panera Bread company to the list. I am sitting in one in Lansing and uploading photos, etc via wireless. All for free. Of course I have to have a Brownie or something

Yep that's the price you have to pay...what a hard world.

I answered my own question on the road about plugging in electrically...no one cares. They all were even willing to find me a seat with an electrical outlet right nearby.

When in Eugene, Oregon ... try Cafe Paradiso at 115 W. Broadway ..downtown ... right up the street from their beautiful new library.

Too bad the library people didn't think about adding Wi-Fi to the facility ... like Medford and Ashland .. it isn't that hard or costly.

Anyway ... Cafe Paradiso was nice ... all you have to do is buy a coffee or something.

Ingrid,
If you ever travel thru Texas, I hear (haven't done it myself) all their reststops (84 of them) along their highway systems are wifi enabled. And if you don't have a receiver in your computer, you can hook up your computer for a short period in kiosks after you swipe your credit card and send/receive your email or surf the net. Seems they want folks to stop and rest to prevent accidents. Nice idea! Those Texans get all the toys first!

Yeah they had those all the way through to Wisconsin too, but I'm lookin' for free...and they wanted me to sign up for a month's service to get it. The best deal was to find hotels with free wifi, or go to a cafe.

Thanks though!!

And how did thenewkid64 know about that Panera Bread location in the first place?

... because I went "war-driving" through the streets of East Lansing before the International rally started, looking for a usable Wi-Fi signal.

Starbucks didn't have it. Barnes & Noble didn't have it. The Capital City Airport's free wi-fi was inaccessible, behind the security checkpoint. The Michigan State University Library was closed. But eventually, driving around town with a laptop plugged into the cigarette lighter (my wife was driving) we stumbled across a signal in a shopping plaza, and traced it to Panera Bread.

BTW, I don't recommend this technique. (It was born of desperation -- I can't take two weeks off to attend a rally and completely disconnect from the Internet!) There are easier ways to find Wi-Fi and cybercafes.

Before a trip, you can check the various wi-fi locator websites. I have a bunch of them bookmarked in my browser. Examples include:

www.wifinder.com
www.wififreespot.com
www.boingo.com
www.80211hotspots.com

But be warned: none of them are truly complete listings, and they don't tell you important things like the fact that the MSU Library shuts its Wi-Fi signal off when the library is closed.

Also check chains that are known to have wi-fi: Starbucks, Panera Bread, Schlotzky's Deli, Kinkos.

Since that episode, I have found out about this cute gizmo: http://www.wifiseeker.com It's a keychain device that sniffs out signals for you. For $29, I might just spring for one myself -- a lot easier than trying to drive with a computer on your lap!

Thats right Rich. I got hooked on their triple fudge brownies 'cause of you

It was great, and I am remiss in giving credit whee it is due. Thanks, I was struggling with the email over Cell connection from the MH. 15 Minutes to get 5 emails was KILLING me.

Not real close to any campgrounds, but right smack dab in the center of Gainesville, Florida they have multiple hotspots in the downtown area. Website is http://www.digitaldowntown.net Surf the net for free while eating wings at Hooters!!

Over at 53rd and 43rd, the coffee shop next to the Chevron station has Wi-Fi. This location is not to far from JD Sanders, a local A/S dealer. Starbucks has it, too, but you have to pay.
