What is that on Mexray's trailer? Is there a reflective or fluorescent material that goes in the lower trim in place of the rubber strip?

I believe he put a blue light string in the lower band.

Like MEXRAY and others on this Forum, I added the red and white tape across the entire width in '04. I purchased it at an auto supply store and it's looking just as it did the day it was installed. A tiny bit of light and it lights up big time!

I've added a string of rope lights on each side of the AS - they are powered behind the Propane tanks, and end together below the lic plate in the rear - hence our AS's name - Blue Halo...

Looks great, but beware some states may consider blue lights all around illegal. zz

Not a trailer but the reflective tape is very effective.

We put white/red reflector tape sections end-to-end across the top of our bumper... (purchase at Harbor Freight)...
This is leaving Yosemite on Tioga Road last July, by the way...

Here's a link to a good summary of the Federal requirements for trailer lighting and reflectors:
http://www.expediter.com/pdf%20folder/J%20folder/J28-30.pdf
I ran across this link while searching or requirements for trucks and vans, since I plan to add conspicuity tape to my Interstate. I can't use it, but maybe you guys can.
Airstream trailers already come with all legally required markers and lamps. If you add conspicuity lights or reflectors beyond the legal minimums, it's probably a good idea to comply with the placement requirements for larger trailers, and not just put them anywhere you feel like putting them.
Mexray's all-around blue lighting would be illegal in Louisiana, according to Louisiana Revised Statute (LRS) 32:309. This link should give you a good starting place for determining the legality of nonstandard lighting by state…

The stripe on our trailer (and the one on the B190 for that matter) both have a reflective white strip in them. It looks like just ordinary white during the daytime, but at night it's pretty bright when you shine a light on it. When we had the B190 parked in front of the house, as we came around the bend at night toward our house, that white strip was the first thing we'd see. Too bad Airstream got away from that...it really is a nice touch.
For example check out this auction and see the white and blue reflective tapes. A strip of that somewhere along the camper, bottom edge perhaps, should work well and be fairly inconspicuous. I found all kinds of options using the search term "reflective pinstripe tape".

The Sprinter vans used by Cox Communications for their cable service techs have a white reflective band about the same place that Airstream Interstates have their chrome band (there are three of those service technicians living on my block, so I see their trucks all the time). I'm thinking of putting a similar white reflective band on my Interstate, just below the chrome band (and a matching one on my toad while I'm at it). But for the back of the Interstate, I'm going to stick with DOT-approved red-and-white reflector tape on the rear bumper and mudflap supports (I have a removable hitch-mounted mudflap for when I tow my Honda) and white reflector tape around the upper corners of the rear door frames, since those are the approved colors and locations for reflector tape on trucks.
