Colorado Vacation- Scenic Trip... Contest #2

This is a wonderful guidebook printed in 1986. It also contains a large folded geologic map with towns and roads.

Contest #1 were two groups of photographs of an unusual 1937 Trailer. These were sent out last week to the two who claimed their prizes.
*******

First person to provide the answer will have this sent to them.. at no charge.

The first CLUES:

The Rocky Mountains had an older, earlier Southern Ancestral Rocky Mountains. There were 'TWO mountainous islands' that were formed. These two islands eroded and deposited 10,000 to 15,000 feet of sediments!

What are the names of these TWO MOUNTAIN ISLANDS, formed about 300,000,000 years ago?

Yes... Colorado had thousands of miles of Ocean Beaches... now hard sedimentary rock layers.

If you plan to tour this area next Summer... this guide has mileage in tenths of a mile for many interesting geological sites between the towns listed on the front cover.

I should have narrowed the exclusions to the contest to those who do not live near Buffalo, Wyoming and own a 1962 Airstream.

We have a winner.

Wikipedia

"Ancestral rock[edit]
The rocks in the Rocky Mountains were formed before the mountains were raised by tectonic forces. The oldest rock is Precambrian metamorphic rock that forms the core of the North American continent. There is also Precambrian sedimentary argillite, dating back to 1.7 billion years ago. During the Paleozoic, western North America lay underneath a shallow sea, which deposited many kilometers of limestone and dolomite.[2]

In the southern Rocky Mountains, near present-day Colorado, these ancestral rocks were disturbed by mountain building approximately 300 Ma, during the Pennsylvanian. This mountain building produced the Ancestral Rocky Mountains. The uplift created two large mountainous islands, known to geologists as Frontrangia and Uncompahgria, located roughly in the current locations of the Front Range and the San Juan Mountains. They consisted largely of Precambrian metamorphic rock, forced upward through layers of the limestone laid down in the shallow sea.[3] The mountains eroded throughout the late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic, leaving extensive deposits of sedimentary rock.

Cretaceous Seaway
Mesozoic deposition in the Rockies occurred in a mix of marine, transitional, and continental environments as local relative sea levels changed. By the close of the Mesozoic, 10,000 to 15,000 feet (3000 to 4500 m) of sediment accumulated in 15 recognized formations. The most extensive non-marine formations were deposited in the Cretaceous period when the western part of the Western Interior Seaway covered the region.[4]"

I will decline Ray's gracious offer for the field guide. I'm unlikely to do much more exploring in Colorado, so I'm sure someone else could make better use of it. So maybe Ray can post another question, and I'll stay out of it.

Thank you Brent. Now I have to come up with another, tougher question.

******
What do all of the towns listed on the front cover have in common? It is not only Mining, but something else.

Guesses are acceptable. If you have a post card of any of these towns, the answer is to be found. Your answer must MATCH my answer, so many can participate.
