Buccaneer State Park Mississippi

Buccaneer State Park Mississippi. My wife and I were both off today and had some time to kill. We went for a short drive down to the Mississippi coast and Buccaneer State Park. The park had a water slide and wave pool and was directly on the coast. The park is currently closed and destroyed with no sign of activity. In New Orleans we had many thousands of homes destroyed by flooding, In Mississippi thousands of homes were wiped from the face of the earth. The entire area around the park is dotted with FEMA trailers and tent cities. What homes are there are new construction. Many Church groups are still providing support to families in the area. In Louisiana 80 thousand families have applied for what is called road home money to rebuild their homes so far 20 families have received checks, I am sure the numbers are the same or worse for Mississippi. It is important to note that this money is your money the tax payer’s money and you may are may not agree with the program, I don’t agree with all the aspects of the program. Be assured the money is not being handed out lightly and seems to tightly control. Be aware that the areas hit by Katrina and Rita have such a long way to go before total recover. I live in the middle of the area and I was surprised at how slow recovery is going in many areas.

I myself carry a lot of insurance on my home and toys I suggest you do the same. I have Allstate on my home and boat they paid fairly and quickly, though not without encouragement. Because of this fact I do not have to avail myself of any special assistance. Stay insured,

I propose that when Buccaneer State Park reopens that we have one heck of a Airstream Rally there. I am sure clancy_boy and Rebel beck would be some of the first ones there. On the bright side I did see approximately 10 Airstreams with people living in them. The new Silver Slipper Casino has just opened near the park and had a line of cars trying to park. I feel it will be several years before Buccaneer is up and running but it could be one heck of a rally those Casinos really know how to feed you.

Thanks Jim

Jim- we will be there too; let us know. We have a son in Algiers; he had a lot of damage, but he is finally back in his house. We had our daughter-in law and her Mother with us for four months after Katrina. Our son is a Lieutenant in the 4th Distrixt, NOPD.

Will be there for sure

I'll be there, yes it was a great park. My sister lives in Gulfport she came here when Katrina was approaching. I have been to the park you talk about and I pray Mississippi will put the funds back into getting it re-opened it in my opinion was the best in Mississippi for a resort vacation.

Wow! Good post. Nice to hear from someone who is actually there and not some "spin" from a slick news reporter or politician! I feel for the folks there. Years ago I went through a big earthquake and a good part of the town I lived in literally fell down. Housing was a huge issue for many for a long time. Many people left and never were able to come back, jobs gone, homes gone...

Keep us posted.

Wow, sad to see that area neglected Jim. I spent some time there a couple of weeks after the hurricane came through, helping out with public safety radio communications. We were camped out at the Wal-Mart Super Center in Waveland. I gather from your post that things have not progressed very much in that town since the disaster. Sad, as it and Bay St. Louis looked like beautiful places to live before Katrina. Google Earth, last time I looked still had pre Katrina imagery.
