Black numbers
The original owners of my '64 Overlander were WBCCI members from the late 1950s through the early 1980s when they retired from traveling. The Overlander had black numbers on it for as long as I can remember -- I don't know whether these were a color that pre-dated the red or if there is another explanation. I do know, that at one time, it was not uncommon to have numbers applied by a sign painter -- my uncle was a sign painter and he painted the WBCCI numbers on the '57 Airstream that the original owners of my Overlander traded when buying the Overlander.
