Be aware of height of overpasses.

This is for all rv's, especially the large bus-types. Know the highest item on your coach. There is an overpass near Spokane WA. that is listed as eleven feet high. I have seen two air conditioner covers and one top vent laying along the roadway. Incidentally, I lost an air conditioner cover in a 45 MPH cross wind, should have checked the fasteners more closely.

Yikes!

There was a very popular newspaper reporter from around here who was killed on Interstate 80, I believe, a number of years ago.

He was in the wrong place at the wrong time, when a semi-trailer went under an overpass that was too low for it. The reporter was passing in an SUV at the time, and was killed instantly.

Many older towns have low railroad bridges, too.

We were traveling thru a residential area of Brooklyn, NY when I was faced with what looked like a very low underpass. The sign said I should clear by about 8 inches.

I then look thru the bridge and seen three city workers with a look of fear on their faces. I did the only logical thing. I gunned it. If I was gonna hit, I was going to do it right!

We made it through unscathed and came home with a good story.

Low Bridge

I have seen a better one, where the guy hit the overpass at about 35 mph, but these will do for now.

According to some other links, that bridge is in Durham, North Carolina.

Many warning signs before the bridge.

That video is attributed to many different locals. Gets me that it is plainly marked and the number of professional drivers the try to get under with oversized rigs. That RV and TT folks hit it does not surprise me at all.

My older Airstream measured 10.5 '. I haven't measured my newer one but I cleared an overhead at customs in Sault Ste Marie, Canada that was marked at 11' and not even close. BUT, I was watching closely

The OM on my 31' Classic said it was 9' 7" to the top of the AC. So i foolishly put a 10' door in my barn so I could park Baby inside.

As I was backing in for the first time I started wondering if the OM was indeed correct. Perhaps I should have measured it first.

I had lots of eyes on it as I slowly backed in, stopping every few feet to get out and see for myself.

She cleared by what looked to be 4 or 5 inches. Whew! I will never do that again without measuring, tho.

We have around 4 deadly bridges in my part of NC... all are clearly marked but apparently knowing the height of your commercial vehicle or RV aren't part of the training.

The last one was a guy with a 13'-6" trailer smacking a 12'-4" bridge at 45 mph. He got tagged for speeding among other things. Funny part was it was caught on LEO dash cam, the LEO was on a speed trap set up when the truck came barreling down the hill. Made the evening news. Sad part is that there are multiple signs, flashing lights and plenty of chances to turn off before hitting it.
