BB code question in signature

I am attempting to edit my signature and am getting a responce
"BB code value is to big"

What does this refer to since I am not changing anything other than the value of a number in the signature?

not exact but might help:

"click on the A/A icon in the upper RH corner of the edit block to convert the WYSIWYG to in-line code. When you add a line with formatting, it repeats all the format tags for that line; if you're formatting 2 or more lines the same way, you can safely take off the BBCode at the end of the first line and the beginning of the second."

I followed you as far as the A/A icon and it change the display but beyoud that you lost me.

Is this something that came with the new software because before one could just edit a signature as TEXT? No idea what BB code is.

BBcode is the the mark up language used for formatting. You can read more here BBCode - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia but my guess is that the size of the font in your signature is the issue. The forums standard text size is 2 - although you could use bold to make it pop a bit.
