Thanks for saying this. I was thinking the same thing but didn't want to stir anything up.

Al's a good guy who loves his Airstream, rallies and the people he meets.

May have had one of those moments where he hit send a bit too quickly. We've all done it.

Let it go and give him a big hug next time you see him.

here's a start -

bravo to Bob for getting up & talking about this.

it's genuinely uncomfortable for some folks to hear, but surely beats the likely outcome when you don't pay attention to such things....

Sal, Maggie, thank you for taking the kindness lead on this - I sincerely doubt that Al meant to hurt anyone.

I read on the internet yesterday that they believe that the use of aspirin or ibuprofen (over the counter medications to address inflamation) could reduce a person's risk of skin cancers. It will be interesting to see what develops in this respect.

I'm 49 (about to turn 50) and have been dealing with basil cells since the age of 29. Regular visit to the dermatologist on a quarterly schedule to get these things burned off. So far have had 4 removed surgically. Once you are diagnosed with having these, as long as you visit the dermatologist on a frequent and regular schedule ... all should be good.

But I'll be first to admit, that drive home from the dermatologist after having anywhere from 20 - 30 places burned each time sure is painful. I can hardly wait to arrive home, take some Tylenol PM and sleep for a couple hours.

I was always told that while typing, if I had something to say that might hurt someones feelings, to sit on my hands for a while and think about it. Ya know, it's amazing, it has worked every time.

Hey Bob: Count me in as one of your brethren! A number of years ago, for my big "50th" I found out I had all three (Basal, Squamous Cell, and Melanoma). Started out with basal cell on the temple, and just went from there. Had a 6" x 3" "cat eye" excision on my back shoulder, and too many others since. Here I sit multiple yrs. later and still on a 4 month rotating visit to the dermatologist and oncologist. I never go with out "knowing", something will be, burned, frozen, biopsied, or excised. Waiting for the green light to move on to 6 or 9 month visits, which I am told could happen by Nov. It is amazing how something like this gives you new perspective on life. I use Airstreaming as a great way of escaping some of the realities of life. Prime example, we are at "Alumapalooza" this week, and I find we are having a great time.

Thanks for sharing.
Terry

You're in good company, it seems, Bob. Unfortunately, you have to count me in the group, too. Growing up in New Jersey, I went through many sunburns at the shore. Approaching 60, the result is skin cancer. I've had 4-5 BCC spots burned off with liquid nitrogen over the same number of years, and one larger one surgically removed from my shoulder. I now see the dermatologist once a year for a screening. I try to make sure I use sunscreen if I know I'll be working outside for a while, and am more diligent about wearing a floppy brimmed hat (that I have to take off if we're headed to Starbucks).

One more here.

A few years back I had one taken off very close to my nose. Could not burn if off since they needed to do a biopsy. Noticed by my reg MD on a check-up. He said go have this checked it doesn't look right. I was 69 at the time .

Now 73 and none since. I am fairly dark skin and tan easy but spent a lot of my younger life exposed to full sun I now cover up.

As others have said once they find the 1st one you need to be checked regularly early detection is very important.

Don't just look at faces and arms. I always wear a shirt, and nearly all of mine (quite a few over the years, including one melanoma about 12 years ago) have been on my back. Get a full body check!

Hi, today I went to have my stitches removed from my back; Doctor said it was healing up good. I hope that I'm done with this for now and forever.

Thanks for the update, Bob. Your experience is helping a bunch of us get off the dime as far as being reactively proactive.
