Bandits of the Night

My wife tells a story much better than I...I am confident some of you have raccoons stories...here is mine from last night. We live on 80 acres out in the woods 5 miles north of Lake Superior...I guess I should be gald it wasn't a black bear Tom R in Two Harbors MN

Hi All:
Many of you have seen my red winter coat with the black and white raccoons decorating the sleeves and the border of the coat. There is writing on it that says something about the "Bandits of the Night May Visit You". Many of you that have visited our Two Harbors home also have seen my "bird deli" by the back patio door.....Red Wing crocks filled with a variety of bird seed. The seed is handy when I need to fill our feeders on our back deck.
But this is a "tail" of a different color. Last night it was cool enough that we went to bed with the air conditioner off, but left patio doors and windows open. Sometime in the night Tom got up to shut a few windows and the back patio door as temps had cooled. When he got to the door there was bird seed strewn all over the carpeting and the cat's food dish (which we filled FULL in the morning) had been dragged across the carpet from the kitchen and the dish was now completely empty! Tom noted that the screen door was open several inches. He immediately wondered if our Callie (cat) had gotten out through the screen door. Surely Callie wouldn't have made the huge mess in front of him. Tom closed the glass patio door and looked at the bird deli mess which needed cleaning up. There looking at him from behind the crocks were two bead-y eyes! A young raccoon was in our house!!! Tom's mind flashed to how he'd get the raccoon out of the house.....should he go get his 22 and risk damaging our house? In the end he calmly walked back to the door and opened it. Our little Bandit of the Night turned around and walked out. Now, will he be back again? He has to be very full for today! But he now knows where a good stash of food is. My red coat will bring back memories of last night's visitor for some time to come. Callie and I slept through the whole episode.
