On Further Investigation

Don, Your comments must have scrolled off my radar of the last 25 messages. I found I can get cable access. I think it is time. This weekend I have been boosting my cable TV service to my Mac. The cable comes into the house then I immediately split it off into three directions--one to our exercise room, one to our lower level family room and then one up two (actually 3) stories to the loft in my wife's hangout. There I split it off again to the bedroom and back downstairs to the living room. It is in the living room that I split off again to my computer in my hangout. By the time it gets to my computer and my EyeTV I am having all kinds of reception problems. So I stuck an electrical booster in the loft split off. For good measure I might buy another and put where I split off again in the living room. Now does a cable modem run off the same cable as the TV? I probably run nearly 100 extra feet to my computer once it enters the house after the first split off. I think I have cured my fuzzy reception problems.

It sure is where I live! In fact, I'm on a multiplexed line and the best I can ever get is about half data rate. I'm at 28.8 right now and that is a very good day; it is usually about 24 to 26.

SWB has promised me DSL "in the next 6 months" for several years now. They are too intent in buying up other phone companies to worry about service for the custiomers they have. My son-in-law is a 4th-level manager at SWB and it is a point of contention with us.

That's rough John....here SBC has DSL and I'm within a few hundred feet of the cutoff. I get 1.54mbs down and 384up.

Once you drive the Ferrari, it's hard to go back the the Buick.... dial up is real rough.....

Is cable a possibility?

Apples

David:
Sorry, didn't see your post in December.
Hope your cable is running ok. I had problems with TVcable when first installed. Time Warner put in an amplifier (free of charge) and reception improved a lot. That amp has since burned out aqnd they replaced it free. I have the cable modem split off ahead of the amplifier and it runs ok in that configuration.
On monday I get the TIVO box. They finally got the upgraded units that have hi-def capability.

Still on slow baud

Don,

I haven't taken the cable modem plunge yet. Just been preoccupied I guess.

20th anniversary of the Mac and I just realized I never got the 20th anniversary MacWorld magazine edition in the mail. I may have to go out and buy it on the newsstand to keep my perfect record---20 yearf continuous subscription to MacWorld. I like it. My wife is getting a bit peeved at my packrat collection.

Just posted to the Apple software update:

Hopefully this will fix the chat with Safari! We'll find out soon enough!

"Safari 1.2 improves compatibility with websites and web applications by providing increased support for standards, adds support for personal certificate authentication, and works with Java 1.4.2 to enable websites that rely on LiveConnect for communication between JavaScript and Java applets.

This update also provides improved application stability, full keyboard access for navigating web pages, and the ability to resume interrupted downloads. "

Also a Java update as well.....

"In addition to providing support for Sun's Java 1.4.2 APIs, this release includes enhancements to drawing performance and stability for both Java applications and Java applets."

Note : This installer will replace your current installation of Java 1.4.1.

For more details on this update, please visit: http://www.apple.com/java/

Bummer?

Eric,

Do you file bug reports about Safari on the Airstream chat room to Apple?

All the time..... and I've spoken to some of the engineering folks about it. Really a great bunch of people.

The way things work around there is simply that everything is prioritized based on customer feedback. The best way to get results is to call the 800# and lodge a case number.....not that I was the only one, but how do you think the root access issue where you could gain root access by holding the control C keys at boot on pre- 10.3 systems got fixed? Several emails and calls....

Safari has a way to go yet....I was just hoping the trip was just a bit shorter!

Eric

Thumbs up Hooray! DSL

To tie up a few knots in this thread, this message arrived in my email today:

"Thank you for your interest in ordering Qwest DSL (sm) service! We have recently expanded the availability of Qwest DSL (sm) service and your telephone number, (952) xxx-xxxx, has successfully qualified for service."

Finally! after 20 years beginning with 300 baud modems. Even if it is 90K at best (per MarkDoane) it is still better than dial-up and I can drop our second phone line number. And those Apple Macintosh updates won't take forever anymore.

I've been on DSL now since November of last year. I don't know how I lived without it! It's kind of like owning a new PowerBook and wondering how you found the patience to work on one of those Mac Pluses with the 1 MB of memory and the 9" B&W screen!!
